Back with Chargers
Daniel has agreed to a one-year deal with the Chargers, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Per the report, the veteran QB's deal is for $2.25 million. The 35-year-old is thus slated to remain Justin Herbert's top backup in 2022. In that role, Daniel did not attempt a pass last season.

Returns from reserve/COVID-19 list
Daniel was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Jeff Miller of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: The quarterback tested positive for the virus last week and missed the Chargers' Week 16 loss to the Texans. Daniel will return to his role as the primary reserve behind starter Justin Herbert in Week 17 against the Broncos.

Lands on COVID list
Daniel has been placed on the Chargers' reserve/COVID-19 list, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Daniel reportedly tested positive, per Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston. If he is unable to clear the league's health and safety protocols by Sunday, Easton Stick would be in line to back up Justin Herbert under center.

Set for Week 1
Daniel (elbow) wasn't listed on the Week 1 injury report, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The backup quarterback dinged his elbow during the team's final preseason game, but the injury was never considered serious. Daniel is expected to back up star quarterback Justin Herbert this season.

Suffers minor injury Saturday
Daniel dealt with tingling in his right arm after getting hit on the elbow while being sacked during Saturday's preseason contest against the Seahawks, Jeff Miller of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: Daniel drew the start in the preseason finale and remains the favorite to operate as Justin Herbert's primary backup during the regular season. The 34-year-old completed nine passes for 70 yards during the contest as the Chargers' offense was shutout. The injury does not appear to be all that serious, as coach Brandon Staley said there should be no long-term issues.

Starting preseason finale
Daniel will start Saturday's preseason finale against the Seahawks, Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County Register reports.
Analysis: Daniel will close out the preseason with another start while Justin Herbert watches from the bench. Easton Stick drew the start during last weekend's exhibition matchup against the 49ers, but Daniel remains the favorite to operate as Herbert's top backup during the regular-season opener against Washington on Sept. 12.

Set for preseason start
Daniel will start Saturday's preseason matchup against the Rams before handing the offense over to Easton Stick, Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County Register reports.
Analysis: Daniel and Stick look set to split series Saturday while No. 1 quarterback Justin Herbert watches from the sidelines, though that workload could shift in later preseason games. The Chargers may also want to take a look at undrafted free agent K.J. Costello at some point. In any case, Daniel looks like the favorite to serve as Herbert's top backup this season.

Inks deal with Chargers
Daniel and the Chargers have agreed on a one-year deal, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Daniel was recently released by Detroit. He will reunite with coaches Brandon Staley and Joe Lombardi in Los Angeles, both of which he has played for in the past. The 34-year-old will bring a veteran presence to the locker room as a backup behind Justin Herbert. The Chargers will be the sixth team the journeyman signal caller has suited up for.

Released, rather than traded
The Lions released Daniel on Thursday.
Analysis: Detroit reportedly engaged in trade talks regarding Daniel back in February, but with no deal having materialized, the team is instead cutting him to save cap space. The 34-year-old veteran will now be free to pursue a backup role elsewhere, and his reputation as a quality mentor will no doubt result in numerous interested suitors.

Could be traded
The Lions have engaged in discussions with teams around the league about dealing Daniel, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: With Matthew Stafford already having been dealt to the Rams in exchange for Jared Goff -- and substantial draft capital -- it looks like the Lions are also looking to move on from Daniel, who signed a three-year, $13.05 million contract just last March. Daniels saw action in four games as Detroit's top backup last season. The 34-year-old will count $5.3 million against the cap in 2021 if he's on the roster, so even if Detroit doesn't manage to negotiate a trade, the team could consider simply…read more

Appears in four games in 2020
Daniel appeared in four games in 2020 and completed 29 of 43 passes for 264 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Analysis: Daniel probably would have seen considerably more playing time had he been backing up anyone other than Matthew Stafford (ankle/thumb), who yet again proved his toughness in 2020 by playing through at least a trio of injuries to his ankle, thumb and ribs. However, even when he did see the field, Daniel didn't provide much hope for the Lions offense, as his 6.1 yards per pass attempt would have ranked 32nd among NFL quarterbacks this year. With the Lions able to save roughly $2.3 million against…read more

Ineffective in relief
Daniel completed 13 of 18 passes for 86 yards in relief of the injured Matthew Stafford (ankle) in Saturday's 47-7 loss to the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Daniel came in after Stafford injured his ankle on Detroit's first drive, and the backup failed to get much going for a Lions team that looked completely overmatched. It was 34-0 Tampa Bay at halftime, and Daniel had only 52 passing yards at that point. When Daniel failed to show any progress in the second half, the Lions brought in third-stringer David Blough for the final three possessions. The offense didn't do any better under Blough, as Jamal Agnew scored Detroit's only touchdown on a punt…read more

Relieves injured Stafford
Daniel completed three of six passes for 29 yards after replacing the injured Matthew Stafford (ribs) in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 31-24 loss to Green Bay.
Analysis: Daniel led the offense to a field goal to pull within seven, but the Lions failed to recover the ensuing onside kick and Green Bay ran out the clock. Stafford went for X-rays after the game, per Mike Rothstein of ESPN.com, and Daniel would start against the Titans in Week 15 and possibly beyond if Stafford's forced to miss additional time due to the injury.

Enters Week 9 in relief
Daniel completed eight of 13 pass attempts for 94 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Week 9 against the Vikings.
Analysis: Daniel entered the game early in the fourth quarter after Matthew Stafford was forced to enter the concussion protocol. He threw an interception to end his first full drive, but he managed to bounce back to lead the Lions to a touchdown on their next possession. Stafford was cleared from concussion protocol and should be ready to retake starting duties in Week 10 against Washington. That will leave Daniel in his usual role as the backup quarterback.

Won't start Week 9
Daniel will serve as the Lions' backup quarterback Sunday against the Vikings after Matthew Stafford was cleared to start following his negative COVID-19 test, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Daniel and David Blough took all the live reps at quarterback during the Lions' three practices this week after Stafford went into self-isolation Wednesday following his placement on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Stafford -- who was placed on the list after being a high-risk close contact of someone who tested positive for COVID-19 -- was still able to participate in virtual meetings with the Lions in anticipation of gaining clearance ahead of game day. With Stafford continuing to test negative…read more

Prepping for possible start
Daniel is preparing as if he'll start Sunday's game against the Vikings, even though the Lions still hope to have Matthew Stafford available to return from the reserve/COVID-19 list before kickoff, Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Stafford seems on track to play if he remains COVID-19 negative, but the Lions won't be able to activate him any earlier than Sunday morning. Should things take a turn for the worse, Daniel would make his sixth NFL start and see his first game action in a Lions uniform. The Lions' pass catchers would all receive a downgrade if Daniel fills in for Stafford.

Moves across NFC North
Daniel is signing a three-year, $13.05 million contract with the Lions, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Daniel spent the past two seasons in Chicago, where he started three games and completed 70.0 percent of his passes for 6.8 yards per attempt, with six touchdowns, four interceptions and 16 sacks. The 33-year-old dump-off artist appears mediocre even by backup QB standards, but he'll at least be an upgrade on last year's disastrous combination of Jeff Driskel (hamstring) and David Blough in Detroit. The Lions expect starting quarterback Matthew Stafford (back) to return to health this spring.

Set for free agency
Daniel failed to see the field in the Bears' 21-19 win over the Vikings in Week 17, and he finished the season with 435 passing yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in two appearances.
Analysis: Daniel made a pair of starts in relief of an injured Mitchell Trubisky earlier in the season, and he averaged 213 yards and 1.5 touchdowns. He'll be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and there's an excellent chance that he continues to serve as a reliable backup, though his fantasy value will be as an emergency option in leagues that start two quarterbacks in games in which he's called upon to start.

Finishes game
Daniel completed one of four passes for nine yards in the Bears' 17-7 loss to the Rams on Sunday.
Analysis: After Mitch Trubisky was removed from in the fourth quarter with a hip injury, Daniel took over for two drives but was unable to move the chains a single time. Should Trubisky be forced to miss the Week 12 home game against the Giants, Daniel would become a fantasy option in leagues that start two quarterbacks. Earlier in the season when given two starts, he completed 73 percent of his passes while averaging 213 passing yards and 1.5 touchdowns.
