Seriously considering retirement
Jones has not yet undergone his needed neck surgery due to the COVID-19 pandemic and does not plan to play in 2020, Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post reports.
Analysis: "If I play again is still in the air, but you know I feel like I got in and did everything I needed to do," Jones said. The 32-year-old was limited to four games in 2019 and released by the Dolphins earlier this offseason. He'll need to undergo neck surgery before being able to kick off what could be a lengthy recovery process, making the 2021 campaign likely his earliest possible date to return, should he choose to. If Jones instead opts to call it a career, he'll retire as second in Miami…read more

Cut by Miami
The Dolphins informed Jones (undisclosed) on Wednesday that he'll be released, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: The 2010 fifth-round pick spent 10 seasons in Miami, highlighted by a 135-tackle, five-interception showing in 2015. Jones' name has often popped up in trade rumors the past couple of years, with injuries and disagreements with coaches playing a role in his decline from peak form. The 32-year-old safety was bothered by rib and chest injuries in 2019, eventually landing on injured reserve in November after playing just four games. The last few years have been bumpy, but Jones has the type of…read more

Shifts to IR
Jones (undisclosed) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Jones struggled with rib and chest injuries over the past month, and there's no indication that his current condition is related. The 31-year-old has only played four games this year. Bobby McCain (shoulder) was placed on IR as well, so Steven Parker and Eric Rowe are expected to assume starting duties.

Six tackles in return
Jones produced six tackles during Sunday's 37-20 loss to Buffalo.
Analysis: Making his return from a four-game absence, Jones logged 67 percent of the defensive snaps and parlayed that playing time into a handful of tackles. He should get even more playing time as he further distances himself from his chest and ribs injuries.

Makes Week 11 return
Jones (chest/ribs) is active Week 11 against Buffalo.
Analysis: Jones entered this contest with a "questionable" tag, but considering he was able to practice in full the last two days of the week, returning from a four-week absence was the most likely outcome. He'll resume his starting free safety role in the Miami secondary, and barring any setbacks, he should continue to serve as a useful IDP due to his regularly high tackle totals.

Officially questionable
Jones (chest/ribs) is listed as questionable for Sunday's divisional contest against the Bills, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Jones closed out the week with two full practice sessions, and he appears to be trending toward retaking the field after a four-game absence. However, due to the tricky nature of Jones' injury -- a cracked rib -- he can't yet be considered a guarantee to suit up Week 11.

Practices without limitations
Jones (chest/ribs) was a full participant in Thursday's practice.
Analysis: Jones has missed the last four games while nursing a cracked rib, and he now appears back to full health. All signs look to be pointing toward the veteran safety suiting up for Sunday's divisional contest against the Bills, during which he stands to play his usual starting role.

Hopes to play Week 11
Jones (ribs) said Wednesday that he's "almost 100 [percent]" and hopes to suit up against the Bills on Sunday, Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Analysis: Jones practiced in a limited capacity Wednesday, just as he managed to do twice last week. After a four-game absence, the starting safety appears to be trending in the right direction to retake the field. He'll have two more opportunities to log a full practice session ahead of Sunday's divisional tilt against the Bills.

Logs limited practice
Jones (chest) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Jones practiced twice in a limited capacity last week but was still inactive against the Colts, so this isn't necessarily a signal that he's making progress. Continue monitoring his practice status leading up to Sunday's matchup against the Bills, as he boasts solid IDP value with 21 tackles and a pass breakup over three games.

Won't face Colts
Jones (chest) is ruled out for Sunday's contest against the Colts, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Jones will miss a third straight game due to his lingering chest injury. The starting safety's absence will be a notable blow to Miami's secondary versus Indianapolis. Chris Lammons and Walt Aikens stand to play increased roles on defense in Jones' stead.

Not suiting up Week 9
Jones (chest) is inactive for Sunday's Week 9 tilt against the Jets.
Analysis: Jones had carried a doubtful tag and also missed the previous two games, so his status is of little surprise. Miami will miss Jones' presence in the back end of the defense with the speedy Robby Anderson in town for the Jets.

Unlikely to play Week 9
Jones (chest) is considered doubtful for Sunday's game against the Jets.
Analysis: Jones was able to work as a limited participant Thursday and Friday, but he still has only a slim chance of retaking the field Sunday. The 31-year-old is likely to miss his third straight game with the chest injury.
