Clear No. 2 RB to open camp
Alyssa Barbieri of USA Today views Herbert as the only running back on the Bears after David Montgomery to be a lock to make the team's regular-season roster.
Analysis: Herbert was excellent when called upon to start for three weeks when Montgomery was injured last year. In those games, Herbert averaged over 100 yards from scrimmage. However, once Montgomery returned, Herbert averaged three touches over the last eight games. Unless he can take work away from Montgomery, Herbert's fantasy potential will only be realized if Montgomery misses time. Also currently in the team's backfield mix behind Montgomery and Herbert as training camp approaches are Darrynton…read more

Four carries in season finale
Herbert rushed four times for 11 yards in the Bears' 31-17 Week 18 loss to the Vikings, and he ended the season with 103 carries for 433 yards and two touchdowns along with 14 receptions for 96 yards.
Analysis: The highlight of Herbert's season was when he took over lead-back duties for David Montgomery over a four-week span and averaged more than 20 touches and 97 yards, showing that he can be a strong option if needed in the future. As long as Montgomery remains ahead of him on the depth chart, he'll be selected in fantasy drafts as a valuable backup with upside if he's needed to start games. He'll enter the second year of his four-year rookie deal, and his solid performance when called upon in 2021…read more

Minor role in win
Herbert rushed twice for nine yards in the Bears' 29-3 win over the Giants on Sunday.
Analysis: Herbert has five carries over the Bears' last five games and unless David Montgomery is unexpectedly unavailable in Week 18 against the Vikings, Herbert's unlikely to see more than a handful of touches.

Finds end zone in victory
Herbert rushed twice for 21 yards and a touchdown while catching his only target for seven yards in the Bears' 25-24 win over the Seahawks on Sunday.
Analysis: With David Montgomery carrying the ball 21 times while being targeted nine times, Herbert was granted a few opportunities to give Montgomery a rest. Fortunately, on one of his chances, he had an explosive 20-yard touchdown run. However, it's unlikely he sees an elevated role in Week 17 against the Giants unless the game becomes one-sided.

Targeted four times
Herbert caught three of four targets for 34 yards in the Bears' 17-9 loss to the Vikings on Monday.
Analysis: Herbert did most of his damage on receptions in the final minutes of the game. Otherwise, he saw occasional change-of-pace work. Unless David Montgomery misses time, Herbert won't likely see enough work to be a major factor in the fantasy playoffs.

Returns to full practice
Herbert (illness) returned to full practice participation Friday.
Analysis: Herbert was unable to practice Thursday due to an illness, but his return to full capacity Friday suggests that he should be ready to suit up Monday against Minnesota. His role is a different question, as he has not topped four rushing attempts in any of his last five games. With David Montgomery (illness) also returning to a full practice Friday, Herbert will likely be limited to an insignificant role once again.

Misses practice Thursday
Herbert (illness) was a non-participant at the Bears' practice Thursday.
Analysis: The rookie was one of three Bears running backs to miss Thursday's practice, joining David Montgomery (illness) and Ryan Nall (COVID-19) as non-participants. Herbert still has a few more chances to practice ahead of the Bears' Week 15 game against the Vikings on Monday night.

Barely used in offense
Herbert rushed once for three yards in the Bears' 45-30 loss to the Packers on Sunday.
Analysis: With Damien Williams returning from a calf injury, Herbert served as the third-string running back, though he was used as the Bears' primary kick returner. Aside from leagues that include return yardage, Herbert won't likely see enough usage to be a lineup option in the fantasy playoffs unless David Montgomery is forced to miss time.

Minimal work in loss
Herbert rushed four times for 16 yards and caught his only target for 11 yards in the Bears' 33-22 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday.
Analysis: Herbert's 27 yards were five more yards than he had in the last three games combined since David Montgomery returned to the lineup in Week 9. Unless Montgomery misses more time, Herbert's likely to have very limited fantasy value.

Four touches in win
Herbert rushed four times for nine yards in the Bears' 16-14 win over the Lions on Thursday.
Analysis: After barely seeing the field in each of the last two games since David Montgomery returned from a knee injury, Herbert was sprinkled in a bit more liberally this week. However, he was still out-touched by Montgomery 20 to four, and unless Herbert's role significantly increases, his fantasy value will remain minimal.

Hardly used in defeat
Herbert had one carry for zero yards in the Bears' 16-13 loss to the Ravens on Sunday.
Analysis: In the two games since David Montgomery returned to the Bears lineup, Herbert has been an afterthought in the offense. His fantasy value will likely remain low unless Montgomery should miss time.

Just four carries as backup
Herbert rushed four times for 13 yards in Monday night's 29-27 loss to the Steelers.
Analysis: Herbert saw veteran David Montgomery return from a four-game absence to lead Chicago's backfield with 15 touches for 80 yards. Although the rookie got three carries during the first half, he was hardly involved during the second, taking a back seat to Montgomery as the Bears staged a comeback attempt. Given Herbert's production while Montgomery was previously sidelined, it's possible he's incorporated more in the offense following the team's Week 10 bye, but Herbert's stock has clearly taken a…read more

Likely headed back to No. 2 role
Herbert is expected to shift into a complementary role Monday against the Steelers with the Bears set to reinstate lead back David Montgomery (knee) from injured reserve prior to the contest, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Analysis: When he spoke to the media earlier Monday, head coach Matt Nagy didn't go into detail regarding what Montgomery's workload might look like in his first game back after a one-month absence, but the 24-year-old appears likely to pace the Chicago backfield in snaps and touches against the Steelers following a good week of practice. The Bears could be inclined to ease Montgomery in to some extent rather than having him immediately reclaim the 70-to-80 percent snap shares he routinely handled in…read more

Receives 25 touches in loss
Herbert rushed 23 times for 72 yards and caught two passes for minus-4 yards in the Bears' 33-22 loss to the 49ers on Sunday.
Analysis: Herbert started out strong, but the 49ers started to load the box, which bottled him up the rest of the way. He's now handled at least 21 touches in each of his last three games, and he'll remain a strong fantasy option until David Montgomery (knee) returns. At that juncture, it will be interesting to see what Herbert's role evolves into.

Hits century mark on ground
Herbert rushed 18 times for 100 yards and caught five passes for 33 yards in the Bears' 38-3 loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday.
Analysis: Facing a Bucs defense that boasts one of the best run defenses in the league, Herbert was the lone bright spot for the Bears in this game. Gaining most of his yardage in the first half, he had more yardage on the ground than the team had through the air at intermission. Even though Damien Williams was active, Herbert was the clear lead back, and there's a great chance he'll remain in that role until David Montgomery (knee) returns to the lineup.

May share workload Week 7
Herbert could see his workload decrease after Damien Williams (illness) was activated off the reserve/COVID-19 list in time for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers.
Analysis: The Bears haven't officially stated who will take over as the starter given Saturday's development, but it wouldn't be surprising to see both Williams and Herbert revert back to the Week 5 workload split, when the duo combined for a near even share of 34 carries. Herbert's excellence against the Packers last week could help him earn the larger share of the aforementioned split, especially if Williams has to work back into game shape after testing positive for COVID-19, but looming over the…read more

Comes up big in first start
Herbert rushed 19 times for 97 yards and a touchdown while adding two receptions for 15 yards in the Bears' 24-14 loss to the Packers on Sunday.
Analysis: Herbert had consistent success running the ball against a Packers defense that's struggled against the run this season, and if the Bears didn't trail for much of this contest, he may have had even better production. Even if Damien Williams (illness) returns next week, Herbert should continue to see significant work in a shared backfield until David Montgomery (knee) returns, so he should retain enough value to be a consideration for fantasy lineups for the next few weeks.

Likely No. 1 back for Week 6
Herbert is the leading candidate to serve as Chicago's lead back Sunday against the Packers after the Bears placed Damien Williams (foot/knee) on the reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday, Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Analysis: The Bears haven't indicated whether Williams tested positive for the virus, but he'll likely face an uphill battle to clear all of the NFL's health and safety protocols with less than 72 hours to go before Sunday's 1 p.m. ET kickoff. After David Montgomery (knee) was placed on injured reserve ahead of the Week 5 win over the Raiders, Williams drew the start, but Herbert saw a surprising level of involvement in the No. 2 role. Herbert played 52 percent of the offensive snaps in the win,…read more

Leads team in rushing
Herbert rushed 18 times for 75 yards in the Bears' 20-9 win over the Raiders on Sunday.
Analysis: Although Damien Williams drew the start, Herbert was involved in the rushing attack early, and as the Bears played with a lead in the second half, he dominated touches as the team closed out the contest. He also had carries in the red zone but failed to cash in, and Damien Williams punched in the only rushing score the team had. Given the amount of work Herbert was given, he may be useful in fantasy lineups while David Montgomery (knee) misses time.

Opportunity may await
Herbert could be in line to start if David Montgomery (knee) and Damien Williams (thigh) are unable to suit up,
Analysis: At this time, Montgomery seems like a long shot to play, and Williams has a thigh bruise, which seems unlikely to keep him out, but more clarity will emerge as the Bears conduct this week's practices. Herbert was selected in the sixth round of this year's draft and was impressive when used with the second-string offense in the preseason, though it's difficult to gauge his potential production should he be thrust into the starting lineup.

Receives three carries
Herbert rushed three times for seven yards in the Bears' 24-14 win over the Lions on Sunday.
Analysis: With David Montgomery leaving the game with a knee injury, Herbert was given rushing attempts late in the fourth quarter of a double-digit Chicago victory. Should Montgomery miss time, Herbert would likely be Damien Williams' backup, which could lead to him seeing weekly touches.

Makes final roster
Herbert is part of Chicago's three-player backfield to start the regular season according to the Bears' official website.
Analysis: After an impressive preseason, Herbert enters the season as the No. 3 running back behind David Montgomery and Damien Williams while the team will be without Tarik Cohen (knee) for at least the first six weeks of the season due to his placement on the PUP list. Although Herbert is on the roster, he may not see many touches unless one of the other backs ahead of him misses time.

Finds end zone
Herbert rushed three times for 15 yards and a touchdown while adding a three-yard reception in the Bears' 41-15 preseason loss to the Bills on Saturday.
Analysis: Herbert played with the second-team offense in the second half, and he took advantage of the mobility of Justin Fields, as the quarterback had the defense leaning in the wrong direction when Herbert converted a 13-yard touchdown run. While Tarik Cohen (knee) continues to miss time, Herbert seems to be tightening his grip on the No. 3 role in the Chicago backfield.

Shines in NFL debut
Herbert is having a strong camp, and he's currently third on the Bears' depth chart, Adam Jahns of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Of course, Tarik Cohen is sidelined as he recovers from his knee injury, so Herbert could quickly fall to fourth on the depth chart, but there's no guarantee that Cohen makes it back in the near future. Hence, Herbert could retain his current spot. In 23 offensive snaps in the preseason opener, Herbert had six carries for 38 yards and three receptions for another 11 yards, and he was successful in the two-minute drill by catching a pair of passes and getting out of bounds. Although he'll need…read more

Sharp in pro debut
Herbert had six carries for 38 yards and three catches for 11 yards in Saturday's 20-13 preseason win over Miami.
Analysis: The rookie sixth-round pick was the third running back through the rotation, behind only David Montgomery (who left after one snap) and Damien Williams. Herbert took advantage, and he was the primary running back during a mid-game stretch where rookie QB Justin Fields led the Bears to 17 points in a span of three drives. The roster numbers for Herbert are still tough if Tarik Cohen (knee) ever makes it back from the PUP list, but so far the rookie is doing his part to convince the team to keep…read more
