Will work as No. 2 back at practice
Panthers head coach Dave Canales said Monday that Boone will work as the No. 2 running back behind Chuba Hubbard with Jonathon Brooks (knee) out for the year and Raheem Blackshear (chest) considered day-to-day, Steve Reed of the Associated Press reports.
Analysis: Boone, who Carolina signed to the practice squad back in October, could get a chance to be elevated Week 15 against Dallas, as currently Hubbard is the only healthy running back on the Panthers' active roster. If Blackshear is forced to sit out versus the Cowboys, Boone may even be called upon to work as the top backup to Hubbard. Carolina's other most notable depth option, Miles Sanders (ankle), won't be eligible to return from IR until Week 16, at the earliest.

Back in Carolina
Boone signed with the Panthers' practice squad Thursday, Darin Gantt of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Boone has bounced between Carolina's practice squad, active roster and free agency this season. He was most recently released from the 53-man roster Tuesday and hadn't suited up since Week 3, when he played just 15 snaps on special teams. In a corresponding move, the Panthers released Stephen Sullivan from the practice squad to make room for Boone.

Released by Carolina
The Panthers released Boone on Tuesday.
Analysis: Boone had appeared in just two of the Panthers' first five games, logging five offensive snaps and another 34 on special teams. He rushed four times for seven scoreless yards. Boone had been serving as Carolina's RB4 behind Chuba Hubbard, Miles Sanders and Raheem Blackshear. Boone is now 29 years old and will look for work elsewhere, though he's also a candidate to go to Carolina's practice squad.

Inactive for Week 2
Boone (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Chargers, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.
Analysis: The Panthers signed Boone off the practice squad to the active roster Tuesday after he played 24 snaps (five on offense, 19 on special teams) and turned four carries into seven yards in Week 1 against the Saints. The 29-year-old will not suit up against the Chargers, however, and the Panthers will go with Chuba Hubbard, Miles Sanders and Raheem Blackshear as the three active running backs for Sunday's contest. Boone's next chance at playing will be Week 3 against the Raiders on Sept. 22.

Signs to active roster
The Panthers are slated to sign Boone to the 53-man roster from the practice squad Tuesday, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Boone had been elevated from the practice squad against the Saints in Week 1. He only took four carries for seven yards in the blowout loss (on five offensive snaps), but also played 68 percent of snaps on special teams. Boone figures to reprise a similar depth role against the Chargers on Sunday.

Reverts to practice squad
Boone reverted to Carolina's practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Analysis: Despite playing just five offensive snaps in the Panthers' loss at New Orleans in Week 1, Boone carried the football four times, albeit for seven yards. With Jonathon Brooks (knee) still out, it wouldn't be surprising to see Boone called back up for Week 2.

Up from practice squad
The Panthers elevated Boone to the active roster Saturday, David Newton of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: With Jonathon Brooks (knee) set to miss at least the first four games of the regular season while on the NFI list, Boone will serve as the fourth running back on the Panthers' depth chart for Sunday's game against the Saints behind Chuba Hubbard, Miles Sanders and Raheem Blackshear. Boone appeared in nine regular-season games for the Texans in 2023, finishing with five carries for 23 yards and seven catches (on nine targets) for 40 yards.

Staying in Carolina
Boone signed with the Panthers' practice squad Wednesday, Darin Gantt of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Boone spent last season in Houston before he was waived, and he then inked a deal with Carolina's practice squad in early 2024. The veteran running back was expected to rejoin the Panthers' practice squad ahead of the coming campaign after winning over the coaching staff in camp.

Won't make initial rostery
Boone was released by the Panthers on Tuesday, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.

Impresses vs. Patriots
Boone rushed eight times for 34 yards while also catching three of his four targets for 17 yards during Thursday's 17-3 preseason loss to the Patriots.
Analysis: Boone helped his chances of making the Panthers' 53-man roster Thursday by recording 51 yards from scrimmage while playing the most snaps (30) of any Carolina running back. The seventh-year pro saw that many opportunities due to Carolina resting its top three healthy RBs: Chuba Hubbard, Miles Sanders and Raheem Blackshear. Nonetheless, Boone outshined both Dillon Johnson and Jaden Shirden and now likely now has a chance of making it past the Panthers' final roster cuts.

Sticking in Carolina
The Panthers signed Boone to a reserve/future contract Monday, Darin Gantt of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Boone started the season on the Texans active roster. He played nine games with Houston and finished with 63 scrimmage yards on 12 touches before being let go by the team Dec. 18. Boone signed with the Panthers' practice squad Jan. 2, and with his new contract, he will have an opportunity to make Carolina's 53-man roster for the 2024 season.

Lands with Carolina
The Panthers signed Boone to their practice squad Tuesday, Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer reports.
Analysis: The 28-year-old veteran running back appeared in nine games for the Texans earlier this season, rushing five times for 23 scoreless yards and adding 7-40-0 receiving on nine targets as a deep reserve. He was let go by Houston last month and will be depth for the Panthers for the final game of the season.

Let go by Houston
The Texans waived Boone on Monday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: Boone will head to waivers after serving as a healthy scratch for the past four weeks. The 28-year-old will now look to catch on with another team after carrying the ball five times for 23 yards and catching seven of his nine targets for an additional 70 yards in nine games this season.

Stays on sidelines
Boone (coach's decision) is inactive Sunday against the Broncos.
Analysis: Boone will take a seat again as Houston rolls with Dare Ogunbowale as its No. 3 option at running back behind Devin Singletary and Dameon Pierce. His next chance to suit up will be Week 14 against the Jets.

Healthy scratch for Week 12
Boone (coach's decision) is a healthy inactive for Sunday's game against the Jaguars.
Analysis: Dameon Pierce (ankle) is active after missing the Texans' last three games, leaving no room in the backfield for Boone. Pierce and Devin Singletary -- the latter of whom served as Houston's lead back during Pierce's absence -- are expected to share most of the snaps on offense, while Dare Ogunbowale is active as the Texans' No. 3 back but is likely to see most of his playing time on special teams.

Fills out backfield
Boone had one carry for three yards and played 19 snaps on offense in Sunday's 39-37 win over the Buccaneers in Week 9.
Analysis: Boone's playing time was his most since Week 1, but significant touches did not come his way. With Dameon Pierce (ankle) unavailable, Boone moved up the depth chart as the primary backup to Devin Singletary, but Houston's running game didn't gain much traction (53 yards) and offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik shifted to a pass-heavy attack. Boone, who had been the primary kick returner in previous weeks, was removed from that role as Tank Dell handled those duties.

Fringe contributor in Week 8
Boone had one carry for five yards, caught his lone target for 11 yards and returned two kickoffs for 44 yards in Sunday's 15-13 loss to the Panthers.
Analysis: Boone was given his typical playing time on offense, but the coaches also moved him up the kick return depth chart. Devin Singletary had been the primary returner on kickoffs, but he's taken on a larger role on offense and the coaching staff may not want to expose him to injury on special teams. Boone has a combined 49 yards on seven touches this season as a running back.

Gets first carry of season
Boone had one carry for four yards in Sunday's 30-6 win over the Steelers.
Analysis: Boone's first carry of the season came well into the fourth quarter with Houston up by three scores. His main role until Sunday has been as a kickoff returner, but Devin Singletary handled those chores in Week 4. Boone has been active for three of four games and played just 30 offensive snaps.

Minimal impact in win
Boone did not log a carry in four offensive snaps and returned one kickoff for 14 yards in Sunday's 37-17 win over the Jaguars in Week 3.
Analysis: Boone returned to the active roster in Week 3 while Dare Ogunbowale was a healthy scratch. The two have alternated as the third back through the first three weeks. Boone was used as a receiving back in Week 1, when he had 22 snaps on offense.

Healthy scratch Sunday
Boone (coach's decision) is a healthy inactive for Sunday's game against the Colts.
Analysis: Boone handled a key role as a pass-catching back in the Texans' Week 1 loss to the Jaguars, recording three receptions for 18 yards on four targets across his 22 offensive snaps. Even though Houston's backfield configuration hasn't changed since Week 1, Boone will be in street clothes for Week 2, likely because the Texans are prioritizing extra depth along the injury-depleted offensive line. Used as receiving back
Boone caught three of four targets for 18 yards in Sunday's 25-9 loss to the Ravens in Week 1.
Analysis: Boone was on the field for more snaps (24) than No. 2 back Devin Singletary (16), but that had more to do with the Texans playing from behind and using passing packages. Houston threw the ball 66 percent of the time compared to 34 percent rushing. That may continue to be the case for the rebuilding Texans, which could lead to more targets for Boone. If that happens, he would blow away the career-best 15 targets he had in nine games with Denver last season.

The Texans re-signed Boone on Thursday.
Analysis: Per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, Boone -- who had been temporarily let go Wednesday -- quickly rejoined the team under the same two-year, $3.1 million contract he inked as a free agent this offseason. Now that he's back in the mix, Boone profiles as Houston's No. 3 running back behind Dameon Pierce and Devin Singletary.

Cut by Houston
The Texans released Boone on Wednesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The Texans might try to keep Boone -- either on the active roster or practice squad -- once they're done assessing the running-back landscape in the aftermath of cutdown day. Boone mostly plays special teams and was previously set to be the team's No. 3 back behind Dameon Pierce and Devin Singletary.

Active against Pats
Boone carried four times for 25 yards and caught one pass for seven yards in last Thursday's preseason opener against the Patriots, Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 Houston reports. "He's an explosive runner," coach DeMeco Ryans said. "He has dynamic speed. He showed a little glimpse of that in the game, and he has continued to move forward."
Analysis: Boone, a former track-and-field athlete in high school, showed a sprinter's speed and acceleration against New England. The 27-year-old running back solidified his chances of a roster spot behind Dameon Pierce and Devin Singletary. Boone had 102 yards on 24 carries and caught nine of 15 targets for 96 yards in 120 offensive snaps for the Broncos in 2022.

The Texans are slated to sign Boone, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Boone, who logged 24 carries for 102 yards and nine catches for 96 yards on 15 targets in nine games with the Broncos in 2022, finished up the season on IR, but he now should be past the ankle issue that landed him there. He returned from his first five-week absence in Week 13, lasting just two games before injuring the ankle again. Could miss time
Denver head coach Nathaniel Hackett acknowledged Monday that Boone (ankle) might be done for the season, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports. "It doesn't look good right now," Hackett said of Boone.
Analysis: DiLalla notes that the team still is evaluating the ankle injury Boone sustained in Sunday's loss to the Chiefs, but if the running back ends up missing time, the Broncos will need to add depth behind Latavius Murray and Marlon Mack. Devine Ozigbo is currently a member of Denver's practice squad and would likely be first in line for a promotion if Boone is sidelined for the Broncos' Week 15 game against the Cardinals.

Broncos offensive coordinator Justin Outten said he "absolutely" envisions Boone having a larger role this Sunday against the Chiefs, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports. "The second week [back from injured reserve] I see him going up," Outten said of Boone.
Analysis: After a five-week stint on IR due to an ankle injury, Boone was activated in advance of last Sunday's game against the Ravens. Boone played 12 snaps in the 10-9 loss and carried six times for 18 yards to go with one reception for eight yards, working ahead of Marlon Mack (five snaps) but firmly behind starter Latavius Murray (35). Limited role in return
Boone rushed six times for 18 yards and secured his only target for eight yards in Sunday's 10-9 loss to the Ravens.
Analysis: Boone operated as Denver's No. 2 running back behind Latavius Murray, who handled 17 carries in the contest. In the backup role, Boone played just 12 of the Broncos' 53 offensive snaps. The veteran likely faces an uphill battle to fantasy relevance with Denver's continued ineffectiveness on offense. Activated off IR
Boone (ankle) was activated off injured reserve Saturday.
Analysis: Boone has been on injured reserve since Week 8, but the veteran almost immediately returns to a relevant fantasy spot with the likes of Latavius Murray and Marlon Mack shouldering the backfield burden at the moment. Boone easily profiles to be the best receiving back of the bunch, but it's unclear how much work that role might have in a Broncos offense that has ground itself to a halt over recent weeks.

Denver designated Boone (ankle) for return from injured reserve Wednesday, Aric DiLalla of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Boone, who has resided on IR since Week 8, is now eligible to practice with the team and will have a 21-day period to be added to the active roster. He's totaled 21 touches for 143 yards across seven appearances this season, but when available, he could see an increased workload in Denver's new-look running back room, which currently features Latavius Murray and Marlon Mack. Analysis: Boone is eligible to return from IR in Week 13 after recovering from an ankle injury suffered in Week 8. The veteran would be welcomed into a running back room that looks a bit different after the Broncos' recent moves. Fellow running back Melvin Gordon, however, played just nine snaps in the contest, raising questions about the backfield split going forward. Garners 87 total yards in loss
Boone rushed seven times for 38 yards and secured all three targets for 47 yards during the Broncos' 12-9 overtime loss to the Colts on Thursday night.
Analysis: Boone served as the No. 2 running back behind Melvin Gordon as expected, and turned in an ideal complementary effort that allowed him to flash his impressive pass-catching skills. The 27-year-old should enjoy a similar role moving forward in the absence of Javonte Williams (IR-knee), although the presence of Latavius Murray as an early-down complement to Gordon could cap Boone's overall opportunity in the offense.

With Javonte Williams having suffered a season-ending knee injury, Boone could see added opportunities along with Melvin Gordon in the weeks ahead, Troy Renck of Denver 7 News reports.
Analysis: Given Gordon's experience as a lead back, the Broncos figure to lean more heavily on him in Williams' looming absence, but the 29-year-old has fumbled four times in as many games this season, and he'll need to take better care of the ball in order to maintain steady volume going forward. Four touches Sunday
Boone carried the ball three times for 20 yards and caught one of three targets for nine yards in Sunday's 32-23 loss to the Raiders.
Analysis: The running back came into the game with only one touch through three weeks, but Boone saw extra work late in the game after Javonte Williams left with a knee injury. Boone was also the target of a fourth-down pass from Russell Wilson on the Broncos' final series as the team attempted to mount a desperate comeback, but the ball clanked off his hands. Boone rushed five times for 44 yards and brought in both targets for seven yards in the Broncos' 23-13 preseason win over the Vikings on Saturday night.
Analysis: Boone put together a strong showing against his former team, starting the game with a flourish with carries of six and 16 yards on two of the Broncos' first three plays. The fifth-year pro appears set to reprise a clear-cut No. 3 role behind Javonte Williams and Melvin Gordon again this coming season, although after averaging 5.5 yards per carry on his 75 career rush attempts, he would ostensibly serve as a quality fill-in if called upon.

Finishes season with six touches
Boone appeared in eight games in 2021 and rushed four times for 35 yards while catching his only two targets for 22 yards.
Analysis: Boone missed the first five games of the 2021 campaign with a quadriceps injury he suffered before the season in training camp. When the veteran running back made his return to the field, his involvement was minimal as a result of the near-even backfield split between Melvin Gordon and rookie Javonte Williams. Both backs had a strong year, so Boone played a depth role for the games in which he was active while also contributing on special teams. Boone is entering the second year of his two-year…read more

Returns from COVID-19 list
Boone (illness) was reinstated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports.
Analysis: Denver received a roster exemption for Boone, so he could be eased back into the fold with lighter workloads in practice to begin the week after he spent 10 days on the reserve/COVID-19 list following his positive test of the virus. Through five appearances with Denver this season, Boone has garnered only seven touches (five carries, two receptions), but he's produced 47 yards from scrimmage. Even so, he isn't likely to see much of an uptick in opportunity over Denver's final three games while…read more

Tests positive for COVID-19
The Broncos placed Boone on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday due to a positive test for the virus, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports.
Analysis: As a result, Boone won't be available Sunday against the Lions. The Broncos list Melvin Gordon (hip/shoulder) as questionable for Week 14, so if he ends up sitting a second game in a row, Damarea Crockett would be the only other running back on the active roster behind rookie second-rounder Javonte Williams.

Placed in COVID protocol
Boone was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday, Ryan O'Halloran of The Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Boone was pulled from Friday's practice after reporting that he wasn't feeling well. While he hasn't been officially ruled out for Sunday's game against Detroit, it's highly unlikely that Boone will clear the COVID-19 protocol in time to suit up. The Broncos are optimistic that Melvin Gordon (hip/shoulder) will be able to play, but if Gordon and Boone both end up sitting, Damarea Crockett would be left as the lone backup to Javonte Williams.

Limited role in loss
Boone rushed four times for 35 yards and caught his only target for 19 yards in Sunday's 22-9 loss to the Chiefs.
Analysis: Boone operated as the Broncos' No. 2 running back in the contest with Melvin Gordon (hip/shoulder) sidelined, though it was rookie Javonte Williams who received the bulk of the carries and targets out of the backfield, as expected. Boone showed burst in his limited touches, but Williams stole the show in his first opportunity as a true feature back. With Gordon expected to practice ahead of Week 14 matchup with the Lions, Boone should return to the No. 3 spot on the depth chart.

Likely headed for No. 2 role
Boone is expected to serve as the Broncos' No. 2 running back behind Javonte Williams in Sunday's game against the Chiefs with Melvin Gordon (hip/shoulder) listed as doubtful for the contest, Kyle Newman of The Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Gordon wasn't able to practice in any capacity this week, making it likely that he'll be inactive for the first time all season. Through their first 11 games, the Broncos have deployed a near-even backfield timeshare of Gordon and Williams, with both receiving similar snap and touch counts in nearly every game. That has left scant work for Boone since coming off injured reserve Week 6, though he showed the ability to produce on the occasions he saw carries for the Vikings the past three…read more

On track to play
Boone (quadriceps) was activated off injured reserve Saturday and is expected to play Sunday against the Raiders, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports.
Analysis: It'll be interesting to see how much playing time Boone syphons away from Melvin Gordon (hip) and Javonte Williams given the duo has operated in a 55-45 split to date. Signed this offseason as a change-of-pace option, Boone figures to be more of a reserve depth piece unless one of the aforementioned players suffers an injury.

Could play Sunday
Broncos head coach Vic Fangio said Wednesday that Boone (quadriceps) is "ready to go," suggesting the running back could be activated from injured reserve ahead of Sunday's game against the Raiders, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports.
Analysis: Assuming Boone is activated, he could factor into the Denver backfield mix right away, as Melvin Gordon is dealing with a hip issue that caused him to miss practice Wednesday. The Broncos haven't suggested whether Gordon is at any major risk of sitting out Sunday, so if he's ultimately cleared to play and Boone gets activated, the latter would likely be third in line for touches out of the backfield behind Gordon and rookie Javonte Williams.

Not returning Week 5
The Broncos didn't activate Boone (quadriceps) from injured reserve Saturday, making him ineligible to play Sunday against the Steelers, Nick Kosmider of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Head coach Vic Fangio teased a potential Boone return Sunday while the running back practiced for a second straight week, but the Broncos will ultimately keep him off the 53-man roster for a little longer. Since Boone's 21-day evaluation window opened Sept. 29, Denver will have to activate him by Oct. 20, or shut him down for the season. While Boone is idle for at least one more game, Damarea Crockett will serve as the No. 3 back behind Melvin Gordon and Javonte Williams.

Close to returning
Head coach Vic Fangio said Thursday that Boone (quadriceps) is close to making his return to the field, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports.
Analysis: The veteran running back has been practicing for the past two weeks, and it's possible that the team could activate him from IR ahead of Sunday's game in Pittsburgh. Even if Boone returns, he likely would be in third in line for work out of the backfield behind Melvin Gordon or Javonte Williams. Gordon is dealing with a bruised lower leg and was limited in practice Thursday as a result, so Boone's return to the roster ahead of this weekend's contest could hinge on Gordon's availability.

Not available Week 4
Boone (quadriceps) was not activated off injured reserve and therefore will not be available Sunday against the Ravens, Ryan O'Halloran of The Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Boone managed to practice all week, but the team will opt to take the cautious approach with the depth running back. It's hard to imagine Boone threatening the workload of either Melvin Gordon or Javonte Williams, especially the way the duo has been running as of late, so any path to consistent production will likely depend on the health status of the aforementioned ball carriers.

May not get RFA tender
The Vikings want to keep Boone, but it isn't clear if they're willing to pay him $2.13 million, the minimum tender for a restricted free agent, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: The team could try to sign him for less than the tender costs, but in the process might end up losing Boone to another franchise. While the 25-year-old is best known in fantasy circles for his disappointing performance in Week 16 of 2019, the Vikings seem to value his contributions on special teams. Boone completed his season with 11 carries for 59 yards and one touchdown through 16 games. He also caught both of his targets for 10 yards.
Analysis: In a much quieter season for Boone compared to his last, the 25-year-old wasn't utilized in the offense much with Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison dominating the backfield. Analysis: Boone has had a strong training camp, but he's still the No. 3 running back behind Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison. While he may be one of the better No. 3 running backs in the league, he may not get many carries unless the top two running backs are injured.

Gashes Bears in finale
Boone carried 17 times for 148 yards and a touchdown Sunday against the Bears. He also caught two of three targets for 12 yards in the 21-19 loss.
Analysis: Boone gashed a solid Chicago front for an impressive 8.7 yards per carry, thanks in large part to a career-long gain of 59 yards. He scored a one-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter and rounded out his performance with a pair of catches as well. Boone disappointed many fantasy owners in last week's start against the Packers, but this performance was much more along the lines of what some thought he was capable of. With that said, the rookie back could head to the bench in the playoffs…read more

Likely to lead Week 17 backfield
Boone is expected to serve as the Vikings' lead option on the ground Sunday against the Bears with Dalvin Cook (shoulder) and Alexander Mattison (ankle) both inactive for the contest.
Analysis: While the Vikings' top two backs on the depth chart were sidelined in the Week 16 loss to the Packers, Boone drew his first NFL start but couldn't capitalize on the opportunity, carrying 11 times for 28 yards and notching a five-yard reception. Boone should be on the field for the Vikings' initial snaps again in the regular-season finale, but if he struggles to get going early, coach Mike Zimmer could choose to rely more heavily on fourth-stringer Ameer Abdullah. In the loss to Green Bay,…read more

Likely to start again
Boone could draw another start Sunday against the Bears, Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: With Dalvin Cook (shoulder) ruled out and Alexander Mattison (ankle) listed as questionable, Boone should have a chance at redemption after his Week 16 start against the Packers yielded 33 yards on 12 touches. He was benched in favor of Ameer Abdullah for most of the second half, with coach Mike Zimmer noting afterward that the second-year pro had missed a few cutback lanes on his carries. In any case, the Vikings are locked in as the NFC's No. 6 seed and seemingly plan to rest some key…read more

Flops as starter
Boone rushed 11 times for 28 yards and caught his lone target for another five yards in Monday's 23-10 loss to the Packers.
Analysis: Boone got the start with Dalvin Cook (chest) and Alexander Mattison (ankle) unavailable, but he failed to make the most of the opportunity and ceded most of the second-half work to receiving back Ameer Abdullah with Minnesota playing from behind. Even if neither of Minnesota's top two running backs returns in Week 17 against the Bears, it's tough to recommend Boone after this mediocre performance.

Getting Week 16 start
Boone will be the Vikings' starting running back Monday versus the Packers.
Analysis: While the Vikings ruled out Dalvin Cook (chest) on Saturday, they kept the door open for Alexander Mattison (ankle) due to his ability to practice in a limited capacity. However, it marked Mattison's first on-field appearance over the last two weeks, so it's no surprise the team is making him inactive as well. As a result, Boone, owner of 4.5 yards per carry as a pro, won't have too many obstacles to touches. Meanwhile, Ameer Abdullah and fullback C.J. Ham are on hand to take on whatever…read more

Still trending toward Week 16 start
Boone is expected to serve as the Vikings' lead back Monday against the Packers with Dalvin Cook (chest) ruled out for the contest and Alexander Mattison (ankle) listed as questionable, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Though the questionable tag implies Mattison is a 50-50 proposition for Monday, the rookie has turned in only one limited practice since injuring his ankle in the Week 14 win over Detroit. Given that the Vikings have now clinched a playoff spot following the Rams' loss to the 49ers on Saturday, Schefter posits that Minnesota won't take any chances with either of its top two backs on the depth chart in Week 16, even with the division title still at stake. As such, Boone will likely step in as…read more

Closing in on first career start
Boone is drawing closer to his first career start Monday against the Packers with Dalvin Cook (chest) and Alexander Mattison (ankle) still unable to practice Friday, Chad Graff of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: On Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the Vikings are considering shutting down Cook for the final two regular-season games to get him healthy for the playoffs. Meanwhile, Mattison continues to deal with swelling and pain due to a sprained ankle that hasn't allowed him to stretch with his teammates before practice the past two weeks. The needle thus is pointing toward the Vikings starting Boone, who has averaged 4.5 YPC on 32 career rushes. While the sample size is small, he'll have a…read more

Prepping for potential Week 16 start
Boone took reps with the first-team offense during Thursday's practice while fellow running backs Dalvin Cook (shoulder) and Alexander Mattison (ankle) were non-participants, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Coach Mike Zimmer was unwilling to offer much clarity on either injured back's status as Monday's game against the Packers approaches, though Adam Schefter of ESPN relayed earlier Thursday that Cook is unlikely to suit up in the divisional game and could be withheld from action in Week 17, too. Meanwhile, Cronin notes that Mattison was spotted working out on the side with a trainer but wasn't doing any running or jogging, which doesn't quell any concern about his health after he sat out the…read more

Scores two touchdowns vs. Chargers
Boone carried 13 times for 56 yards and two touchdowns during Sunday's 39-10 win over the Chargers.
Analysis: With Alexander Mattison (ankle) already sidelined, Boone stepped in when Dalvin Cook left with a chest injury in the third quarter. He actually fared better than Cook did on a per-touch basis while scoring short rushing TDs on back-to-back drives in the fourth quarter. It wouldn't be entirely surprising if Cook missed time because of his injury, meaning Boone could be in line for a larger workload next Monday against the Packers if Mattison isn't active for the contest.

Ready to step in for Mattison
Boone is expected to fill in for the injured Alexander Mattison (ankle) as the Vikings' No. 2 running back in Sunday's game against the Chargers, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. "I'm expecting big things from Boone and he knows that," lead back Dalvin Cook said of his new backup. "He's ready to go, no doubt about it. I'm ready to see him light it up. There's no drop off.''
Analysis: The Vikings eased up on a banged-up Cook's usage in a comfortable 20-7 win over the Lions in Week 14, allowing Mattison (16 touches) and Boone (five touches) to see more work than usual. Mattison tweaked his ankle along the way and wasn't able to practice at any point this week, clearing the way for Boone to move up a spot on the depth chart. With Cook's health seemingly in a better spot this week and the Vikings set to face what appears to be a more formidable opponent in Los Angeles, Boone…read more

Five carries Sunday
Boone had five carries for 13 yards in Sunday's win over Detroit.
Analysis: Boone got some work in a game where the Vikings had a large lead in the second half. He hadn't had a carry since Week 3 and would need Dalvin Cook or Alexander Mattison to be injured to get significant touches.
