Serves as blocker 2020
Carter hauled in one of two targets for a 21-yard gain in the Bengals' Week 17 loss to the Ravens.
Analysis: The tight end suited up in 15 of the Bengals' 16 games, but he drew a mere seven targets on his 220 offensive snaps for the season, illustrating how much the Bengals view him as a blocker. His role is unlikely to change no matter what other additions or subtractions the Bengals make at the position in 2021.

No targets in loss
Carter played 14 offensive snaps and didn't receive a target in Sunday's 19-7 loss to the Dolphins.
Analysis: Carter maintains around a 25 percent target share on a weekly basis. However, he's rarely used outside of a blocking role, as he's recorded just four receptions for 32 yards through 11 games.

Won't go Sunday
Carter (shoulder) won't play in Sunday's game against the Browns, Geoff Hobson of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Carter was originally thought to be a healthy scratch, however, he won't sit out due to the shoulder injury. The Bengals will head into the rivalry game with just two active tight ends in Drew Sample and Mason Schreck.

In line for more snaps
Carter is in line for more snaps as the Bengals' second tight end now that C.J. Uzomah is out for the season.
Analysis: Carter presumably will be in there most often to block - in his first two seasons with the Bengals, he's had four targets, catching two passes for 13 yards and a touchdown. He had seven snaps Thursday night against the Browns without getting targeted.

Nabs contract tender
The Bengals tendered a 2020 contract Monday to Carter, a restricted free agent.
Analysis: Carter has spent his entire career in Cincinnati after going undrafted out of Nebraska in 2017. He took on an expanded role for the Bengals over the final quarter of the 2019 season, but he made most of his impact as a blocker. During that four-game span, he only recorded two receptions for 13 yards and a score.

Grabs first career TD in 2019
Carter caught two of three targets for 13 yards and one touchdown across 15 regular-season games in 2019.
Analysis: Carter kicked off the 2019 campaign relegated to special teams, but he managed to carve out a somewhat expanded role on offense after Drew Sample (ankle) suffered a season-ending injury. He's set to become a restricted free agent this offseason.

Clears concussion protocol
Carter does not carry an injury designation Friday, Tyler Dragon of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Analysis: Tyler's absence from Friday's injury report indicates that he's fully cleared the league's five-step protocol for head injuries. He returned to practice without limitations Thursday. With Drew Sample (ankle) ruled out for Sunday's game against the Browns, Carter could be in line for increased depth snaps.

Upgrades to full practice
Carter (concussion) logged a full practice Thursday, Jay Morrison of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Carter missed the team's Week 13 victory over the Jets and logged a limited practice Wednesday. However, he upgraded to the full practice Thursday and should be in a strong position to return for the Bengals' Week 14 matchup against the Browns as a result.

No practice Thursday
Carter (concussion) is not practicing Thursday, Tyler Dragon of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Checked for concussion
Carter was forced out of Sunday's game against the Steelers to be evaluated for a concussion.
Analysis: Carter is considered doubtful to return to Sunday's matchup, leaving C.J. Uzomah and Tyler Eifert as the Bengals' only healthy tight ends. If Carter's concussion is confirmed, it will be his second head injury of the year -- he suffered one in the preseason as well.
