Reverts to practice squad
Coleman reverted to the 49ers' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Analysis: With Elijah Mitchell (groin) unavailable, Coleman was elevated to the active roster for the AFC Championship Game but played just one offensive snap and didn't record any counting stats. The veteran running back made five regular-season appearances for the 49ers and totaled five touches for 70 yards and two scores.

Shifts to active roster
Coleman was elevated from the practice squad Saturday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: This likely matters more for the status of Elijah Mitchell, who is currently listed as questionable for Sunday's game with a groin injury. Given the talented second-year back didn't practice all week, it's possible Mitchell would be unavailable, meaning Jordan Mason, Tyrion Davis-Price and even Coleman could see a handful of carries in an effort to spell All-Pro stud Christian McCaffrey.

Reverts to practice squad
Coleman reverted to the 49ers' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Analysis: Coleman was elevated to the active roster ahead of the 49ers' wild-card matchup against Seattle, but he was ultimately left inactive. The veteran running back made five regular-season appearances for San Francisco, totaling 15 touches for 70 yards and two scores across 30 offensive snaps.

Not playing Saturday
Coleman is inactive for Saturday's wild-card game against the Seahawks due to a coach's decision, Lindsey Pallares of the 49ers' official website reports.
Analysis: Coleman is essentially the odd man out at running back, as the team will roll with Christian McCaffrey, Elijah Mitchell and Jordan Mason as backfield options.

Gets call to active roster
The 49ers elevated Coleman to the active roster from the practice squad Friday for Saturday's wild-card matchup against the Seahawks.
Analysis: Coleman made five appearances during the 2022 regular season, totaling 12 rushing attempts for 26 yards and three receptions for 44 yards across 30 offensive snaps. The 49ers' running back room is healthy, so the veteran running back figures to operate as an emergency option behind Christian McCaffrey, Elijah Mitchell, Jordan Mason and Tyrion Davis-Price.

Back to practice squad
Coleman reverted to the 49ers' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction log.
Analysis: Coleman suited up Sunday against the Buccaneers and received one snap on offense, but he never touched the ball. The 29-year-old played ahead of third-round rookie Tyrion Davis-Price, who was inactive as a healthy scratch. Whether Coleman will receive another elevation Week 15 against the Seahawks is unclear, although Christian McCaffrey (knee) is currently considered questionable for the game.

Called up for Week 14
The 49ers elevated Coleman from the practice squad Saturday for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Coleman first joined San Francisco's practice squad in mid-September and was elevated for two games before being signed to the active roster ahead of Week 6. However, the 29-year-old saw his already limited playing time decrease in back-to-back games, and he was ultimately cut after the team acquired Christian McCaffrey in late October. With fourth-string running back Elijah Mitchell (knee) now on IR, it's likely that Coleman will take over his role as a core special-teamer against Tampa Bay.…read more

Returns to San Fran
San Francisco signed Coleman to its practice squad Wednesday.
Analysis: Coleman was cut by San Francisco on Tuesday after logging just one special-teams snap during the team's Week 7 loss to the Chiefs. The previous two weeks, the running back totaled 15 touches for 70 yards and two scores, but the acquisition of Christian McCaffrey made Coleman the odd man out in the 49ers' backfield. However, the veteran will return to San Francisco's organization just one day after being cut and will likely operate as an emergency option on the practice squad.

Cut by San Francisco
The 49ers released Coleman on Tuesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: In a four-game sample with San Francisco this season, Coleman ranged from zero offensive snaps to a 28 percent share, the latter of which amounted to his most productive appearance as he put up 67 yards from scrimmage and two TDs in Week 5 at Carolina. He averaged a measly 2.2 YPC on his 12 rushes and now finds himself on the open market following the team's acquisition of Christian McCaffrey. Plays one snap Sunday
Coleman logged one snap on special teams in Sunday's 44-23 loss to the Chiefs.
Analysis: Coleman fell out of favor quickly following his two-touchdown game back in Week 5, as he has produced just three yards on four attempts in the two games since then. Tyrion Davis-Price (13 offensive snaps) appears to have leapfrogged the veteran as a reserve running back in San Francisco. The addition of Christian McCaffrey last week puts Coleman's roster spot in jeopardy heading into a crucial matchup against the Rams next Sunday.

Ineffective against old club
Coleman rushed four times for three yards in Sunday's 28-14 loss to the Falcons.
Analysis: Available to the 49ers offense for a third straight game, Coleman was unable to replicate last week's two-score performance. It is worth nothing that the 29-year-old stuck as Jeff Wilson's primary backup despite the return of Tyrion Davis-Price (no touches) and the presence of preseason standout Jordan Mason (no touches). Both veteran backs struggled mightily in a favored matchup, so perhaps head coach Kyle Shanahan will try some of his younger backs behind Wilson next Sunday against the…read more

Inked to active roster
The 49ers signed Coleman to their 53-man roster Wednesday.
Analysis: Coleman had reverted to the practice squad after rushing times for 23 yards and a touchdown while securing all three of his targets for 44 yards and another score during Sunday's win over the Panthers. In light of that strong performance, Coleman has seemingly now earned a spot as the No. 2 running back behind Jeff Wilson. Considering that Elijah Mitchell (knee) doesn't yet look close to a return from injured reserve, Coleman is an interesting fantasy option heading into what should be a…read more

Back to practice squad Monday
Coleman reverted to the 49ers' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Analysis: Coleman found his footing after being elevated from San Francisco's practice squad for the second game in a row, notching both a rushing and receiving touchdown during Sunday's win. With Tyrion Davis-Price (ankle) and Marlon Mack (coach's decision) both out, the practice squad back played 19 of the 49ers' 67 offensive snaps behind Jeff Wilson, recording 23 rushing yards on eight carries and catching all three of his targets for 44 yards. Finds end zone twice Sunday
Coleman carried the ball eight times for 23 yards and a touchdown and caught all three of his targets for 44 yards and a second TD in Sunday's 37-15 win over the Panthers.
Analysis: The veteran running back, who saw only one offensive snap last week in his return to the 49ers, was the surprise star on offense in this one. Coleman bookended the scoring on the afternoon, catching a nine-yard TD pass in the first quarter before adding a five-yard scoring run in the fourth. Set as No. 3 running back Sunday
Coleman is slated to serve as the 49ers' No. 3 running back in Sunday's Week 5 clash against the Panthers with Marlon Mack inactive for the contest.
Analysis: Coleman was elevated from the practice squad Saturday, and he'll now enjoy active status for a second straight game with Mack a healthy scratch. However, even with Elijah Mitchell (knee) and Tyrion Davis-Price (ankle) sidelined, Coleman saw only one snap in Week 4 against the Rams, and a similar fate could await him Sunday while operating behind Jeff Wilson and Jordan Mason.

Elevated to active roster
The 49ers elevated Coleman on Saturday from their practice squad to their active roster for Sunday's game against the Panthers, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: With Elijah Mitchell (knee) and Tyrion Davis-Price (ankle) still out, Coleman will be active for a second straight week. However, the veteran running back played just one offensive snap during the team's Week 4 win over the Rams, while Jeff Wilson dominated the backfield work. Plays one offensive snap
Coleman failed to record a single rushing attempt in Monday's 24-9 win over the Rams.
Analysis: Coleman was a complete nonfactor Monday, seeing the field for just one offensive snap. The veteran running back was elevated from the practice squad ahead of Monday's night game, but it was starter Jeff Wilson who saw the vast majority of the work out of the backfield. With his lack of involvement in his first game back, Coleman is difficult to trust for fantasy at this point. The 49ers visit the Panthers in Week 5.

Up from practice squad
Coleman has been elevated from the 49ers' practice squad ahead of Monday night's game against the Rams.
Analysis: With Elijah Mitchell (knee) on IR and Tyrion Davis-Price out with an ankle injury, Coleman will provide the 49ers backfield -- which also includes Jordan Mason and Marlon Mack -- with some added depth behind current starter Jeff Wilson. Coleman's familiarity with coach Kyle Shanahan's offense could lead to some change-of-pace work Monday, though Wilson still should see the bulk of the team's Week 4 carries.

The 49ers signed Coleman to their practice squad Wednesday.
Analysis: Coleman spent the 2021 campaign and the entire 2022 offseason and preseason with the Jets, but he was a roster casualty on cutdown day Aug. 30. He worked out for the 49ers last week, and after Tyrion Davis-Price (ankle) emerged from this past Sunday's win against the Seahawks with an injury -- joining Elijah Mitchell (knee) on the sideline -- Coleman has returned to San Francisco, where he played in 2019 and 2020. Three carries in preseason finale
Coleman rushed three times for 14 yards in Sunday's 31-27 preseason win over the Giants.
Analysis: Coleman's touches came in the second quarter with backup quarterback Mike White in the game. While the veteran running back isn't expected to play a key offensive role when others at the position are healthy, all signs point to Coleman making the Jets' 53-man roster.

Two offensive touches, two returns
Coleman rushed twice for eight yards and returned a pair of kickoffs for 39 yards in Monday's 24-16 preseason win over Atlanta.
Analysis: Coleman didn't play much in this one, but his roster spot seems pretty secure as a veteran presence in the backfield who can contribute on special teams when called upon. The 29-year-old running back's likely to open the season third on the depth chart behind youngsters Breece Hall and Michael Carter.

Returns from reserve list
The Jets reinstated Coleman (illness) from the active/non-football injury list Monday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: Coleman now is in the clear to resume practicing with the Jets as the team begins its first full week of training camp. The veteran will head into the Jets' Aug. 12 preseason opener versus the Eagles as the No. 3 option on the depth chart, but he'll face competition from the likes of Ty Johnson, La'Mical Perine and Zonovan Knight to retain the role heading into Week 1.

Coach Robert Saleh expects Coleman (illness) to return to practice in the first week of August, Zach Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Coleman is the favorite to secure the third spot on New York's running back depth chart behind Breece Hall and Michael Carter, though he'll face competition from the likes of Ty Johnson, La'Mical Perine and Zonovan Knight. The veteran running back opened training camp on the active/non-football illness list, so Coleman will need to be activated before he's eligible to practice.

Dealing with illness
The Jets placed Coleman on the active/non-football illness list Tuesday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: When he was placed on the NFI list earlier Tuesday, it was reported that Coleman suffered an injury while training prior to camp, per Ethan Greenberg of the team's official site. That may have been the case, but the NFL's transaction report officially notes Coleman in fact is on the illness version of the list. He's eligible to practice or play in preseason games at any point, but whenever he's available he'll be working behind rookie Breece Hall and Michael Carter at running back.

Returning to Jets
Coleman will re-sign with the Jets, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Coleman, who turns 29 next month, finished last season with 84 carries for 356 yards to go along with 11 catches (on 16 targets) for 49 yards in 11 games. Whereas last year, when Coleman approached Week 1 with starting aspirations, he appears destined for a complementary role behind ascending 2021 fourth-rounder Michael Carter in his second campaign with the Jets.

Sees little action in Week 18
Coleman carried the ball five times for six yards and failed to catch his only target in Sunday's 27-10 loss to the Bills.
Analysis: The Jets' offense mostly sputtered in this one, but Coleman didn't exactly provide a spark with his rare touches. The former Falcon and 49er heads into free agency having managed to produce only 405 scrimmage yards and zero touchdowns in 11 games this season for the Jets.

The Jets activated Coleman (illness) from the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday.
Analysis: Coleman, who was sidelined for the Jets' Week 17 loss to the Buccaneers, is slated to be available for Sunday's season finale against the Bills. Doesn't do much with 15 touches
Coleman rushed 14 times for 57 yards and caught his only target for four yards in Sunday's 26-21 win over the Jaguars.
Analysis: Coleman's 15 touches marked his second-highest total of the season, but he finished a distant third on the team in rushing yards behind Michael Carter (16 carries for 118 yards) and quarterback Zach Wilson, who had 91 yards and a touchdown on four rushing attempts. Cleared to face Dolphins
Coleman (concussion) doesn't carry an injury designation into Sunday's game against the Dolphins, David Furones of the Sun Sentinel reports.
Analysis: Coleman was able to practice fully in every practice this week after sitting out the Week 14 loss to New Orleans. He's expected to play second fiddle to Michael Carter (ankle) in the Jets' backfield against the Dolphins, but New York will first need to officially active Carter from IR.

Coleman (concussion) was listed as a full practice participant Wednesday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Coleman was inactive for the Jets' Week 14 loss to the Saints, but his full practice participation to begin Week 15 prep indicates that he's progressing through the NFL's five-step concussion protocol in advance of Sunday's game against the Dolphins. Meanwhile, Michael Carter (ankle) is a candidate to come off injured reserve in advance of the weekend, so Coleman could be headed for a smaller role after he logged a total of 27 carries between both of his previous two appearances Weeks 12 and 13.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh said Wednesday that he expects Coleman (concussion) back for Sunday's game against the Dolphins.
Analysis: Coleman -- who missed the Jets' Week 14 loss to the Saints -- is thus in line to practice in advance of the contest and is poised to return to action this weekend, barring any setbacks. Along with Coleman, the Jets also expect fellow running back Michael Carter (ankle) to come off injured reserve this week, according to Saleh. Won't play Sunday
Coleman (concussion) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Saints, Ethan B. Greenberg of the Jets' official site reports.
Analysis: Coleman landed in the concussion protocol following last week's loss to the Eagles, and he'll be sidelined for at least one game. The 28-year-old has been operating as the No. 1 tailback with Michael Carter (ankle) on injured reserve, but the Jets will now have to go further down the depth chart. In any case, Coleman's inability to practice even in a limited capacity at this stage of the week isn't a promising sign with regard to his chances of suiting up Sunday against the Saints. Leads backfield again
Coleman carried the ball 11 times for 58 yards in Sunday's 33-18 loss to the Eagles. He added three receptions for 19 yards.
Analysis: Coleman was limited by game script, as the team attempted only 17 rushes on the day. Zach Wilson was the only other Jets' player to record multiple carries, leaving Coleman as the clear primary back once again. Despite the limited volume, he picked up chunk gains of 17 and 15 yards to account for the majority of his production. Coleman figures to have at least one more contest in the top role, as Michael Carter (ankle) is not eligible to return from injured reserve until Week 15.

Gets 18 touches in Houston
Coleman rushed 16 times for 67 yards and caught two of three targets for three yards in Sunday's 21-14 win over Houston.
Analysis: Coleman led the Jets' backfield in carries and rushing yards, though Ty Johnson and practice squad elevation Austin Walter combined for 80 rushing yards on 15 carries, including a two-yard Walter touchdown run late in the first half. Coleman performed decently as the leading option in a crowded backfield with Michael Carter (ankle) on IR, and he should maintain that role in Week 13 against the Eagles.

Analysis: Carter will be sidelined for at least three games after being deactivated, though his estimated recovery timeline bodes well for his chances of being ready to play when first eligible Week 15 at Miami. Carter injury presents opportunity
Coleman rushed five times for 16 yards and caught his lone target for two yards in Sunday's 24-17 loss to the Dolphins.
Analysis: Coleman posted a forgettable stat line, but it's noteworthy that Ty Johnson only got one rushing attempt to Coleman's five, because starter Michael Carter exited the game with an ankle injury. If Carter's forced to miss additional time, Coleman would likely take over as the primary early-down running back for the Jets in an appetizing Week 12 matchup with the Texans.

Six touches in return
Coleman (hamstring) rushed four times for 29 yards and caught two of three targets for four yards in Sunday's 45-17 loss to Buffalo.
Analysis: Despite ripping off a 15-yard run -- the Jets' longest of the game -- on his first touch back following a four-game absence, Coleman finished third among New York's running backs with six touches, trailing Michael Carter (20) and Ty Johnson (seven). Coleman and Johnson should continue to share the work left over behind Carter in Week 11 against the Dolphins and beyond, but Johnson's superior pass-catching ability gives him greater upside than Coleman.

Back from four-week absence
Coleman (hamstring) is active for Sunday's game against the Bills.
Analysis: Coleman had been sidelined for the past four weeks with the hamstring injury, missing three contests in total following the open date in the Jets' schedule Week 6. Though he was listed atop the depth chart to begin the season, Coleman hasn't played more than 25 percent of the Jets' offensive snaps in any of his four appearances before missing time with the injury. Coleman will likely have to settle for limited work behind Michael Carter and Ty Johnson now that he's healthy again.

Questionable but likely to play
Coleman (hamstring) is listed as questionable but expected to play Sunday against the Bills, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Coleman was a full participant in practice Friday, so it looks like he's finally over the hamstring injury that's kept him sidelined since Week 5. He'll likely work in a rotational role with Michael Carter and Ty Johnson, though Carter's expected to see the majority of snaps between the three running backs.

Should play Sunday
Coach Robert Saleh said Friday that Coleman (hamstring) "looks good" to play Sunday versus Buffalo.
Analysis: The veteran tailback hasn't seen the field since Week 5 due to the hamstring injury, but it appears he'll be available for this weekend's divisional matchup. Rookie Michael Carter has taken control of the Jets' backfield work while Ty Johnson has worked in a complementary role, so Coleman is likely looking at a modest workload in his return.

Practices in limited fashion
Coleman (hamstring) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice.
Analysis: Coleman hasn't played since Week 5 due to a hamstring injury, but he looks to be trending in the right direction to return for Sunday's divisional matchup against the Bills. Over four appearances this season, Coleman has logged 21 carries and has drawn three targets.

Expected to return Sunday
Coleman (hamstring) is expected to return for Sunday's game against Buffalo, Ralph Vacchiano of SportsNet New York reports.
Analysis: Coleman has missed the last three games due to a hamstring injury, but he's trending toward being active in Week 10. Across his first four appearances with the Jets, the 28-year-old has recorded 21 carries for 73 yards while hauling in two of three targets for 17 yards.

Listed as non-participant again
Coleman (hamstring) was listed as a non-participant on Tuesday's practice estimate, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Coleman has missed the Jets' last two games, and back-to-back 'DNP' listings suggest that he could be trending toward missing Thursday night's game against the Colts as well. Michael Carter should continue to head the team's backfield in Week 9 regardless, but another Coleman absence might mean more work for Ty Johnson and, to a lesser extent, La'Mical Perine.

Coleman (hamstring) was listed as a non-participant on Monday's practice estimate, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The Jets didn't hold a practice Monday due to the short week ahead of Thursday's game against the Colts, but Coleman likely wouldn't have been able to take the field. The 28-year-old has missed the last two contests with a hamstring issue and will likely have to practice in some capacity if he hopes to return against Indianapolis.

Won't play Sunday
Coleman (hamstring) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Bengals, Ethan B. Greenberg of the Jets' official site reports.
Analysis: Coleman has been unable to practice this week after sitting out against the Patriots in Week 7, and he'll be sidelined for the second straight contest. Michael Carter should continue to work as New York's lead tailback, with Ty Johnson and La'Mical Perine serving as the No. 2 and 3 options, respectively.

Doesn't practice Wednesday
Coleman (hamstring) didn't practice Wednesday, Andy Vasquez of The Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Coleman was a late addition to the injury report ahead of the Jets' Week 7 matchup with the Patriots and was ultimately ruled out for the contest. Michael Carter and Ty Johnson have been operating as the primary running backs throughout the season, so even if Coleman can return to practice this week, he will likely play a small role against the Bengals on Sunday. The 28-year-old has totaled 23 touches for 90 yards across four contests during the 2021 campaign.

Not ready to go Sunday
Coleman (hamstring) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Patriots.
Analysis: Coleman was a late addition to the Jets' Week 7 injury report after the hamstring injury limited his participation in Friday's practice. With Coleman not making enough progress leading up to the 1 p.m. ET kickoff to suit up, the Jets will roll with Michael Carter, Ty Johnson and La'Mical Perine as their active backs Sunday. Expect Carter and Johnson to dominate the snaps and touches out of the backfield.

Hurts hamstring late in week
Coleman is listed as questionable for Sunday's game in New England with a hamstring injury, Rich Cimini of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Coleman didn't appear on the injury report until Friday, when he was limited in practice. The late addition to the report likely indicates that Coleman suffered the injury during practice, but the Jets apparently have some hope that he'll be ready to go for Sunday's game. Even if he avoids the inactive list, Coleman is unlikely to play a major role in the offensive game plan, as Michael Carter and Ty Johnson are both ahead of him on the depth chart at running back.

Three touches in Week 5 loss
Coleman rushed three times for 11 yards and failed to secure his lone target in Sunday's 27-20 loss to the Falcons.

Almost scores winning TD
Coleman rushed four times for 14 yards and caught both of his targets for 17 yards in Sunday's 27-24 overtime win over Tennessee.
Analysis: Coleman spent most of the game watching Michael Carter (13 carries for 38 yards and a touchdown) struggle to find room, but the Jets leaned on the veteran running back in overtime. He came one yard from ending it in overtime but was ruled out of bounds on his dive to the pylon. Not on injury report
Coleman (illness) isn't listed Wednesday on the Jets' initial Week 4 injury report.
Analysis: Coleman is evidently past the illness that caused him to miss this past Sunday's game against the Broncos, thus making him an option to rejoin the Jets backfield this weekend against the Titans. That said, he probably slots in as the team's No. 3 option at running back in a committee arrangement which also features Ty Johnson and Michael Carter.

Sitting out Week 3
Coleman (illness) will miss Sunday's game in Denver, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Coleman practiced fully Friday, but the non-COVID illness will keep him out of the game. The veteran running back was starting to get phased out of the Jets offense Week 2, anyway. Michael Carter and Ty Johnson split most of the carries in that one and should work in a similar timeshare once again.

Five carries in Week 2 defeat
Coleman rushed five times for 24 yards and wasn't targeted in Sunday's 25-6 loss to New England.
Analysis: The rebuilding Jets featured younger running backs Michael Carter (11 carries) and Ty Johnson (12 carries) over Coleman. Which player will be the go-to choice near the goal line remains unclear due to New York's lack of red-zone trips early in the season. The Jets have mustered just 20 points through two weeks and will face another difficult matchup in Week 3 when they travel to Denver.

Nine carries in Jets debut
Coleman rushed nine times for 17 yards and wasn't targeted in the passing game in Sunday's 19-14 loss to Carolina.
Analysis: Coleman got nine of the Jets' 17 rushing attempts, but it's not a good sign that his most memorable play was a 4th-and-1 run that got stuffed for a one-yard loss. New York averaged only 2.6 yards per carry as a team while giving each of Coleman, Ty Johnson and Michael Carter at least five touches. An ineffective three-way committee is the opposite of the recipe for fantasy success, so the Jets' backfield is unlikely to garner much interest in Week 2 against the Patriots.

Coleman sits atop the Jets' running back depth chart heading into Week 1 versus the Panthers, Ralph Vacchiano of SportsNet New York report.
Analysis: Coleman is seemingly projected as one of the team's top backs to open the 2021 campaign and his spot as the top dog on the depth chart would tend to agree with that assumption. Ty Johnson and Michael Carter (undisclosed) are likely next in line for backfield work and there will likely be a rotation in the Jets' backfield, but Coleman should play a significant role to begin the season.

Projected to open as lead back
Rich Cimini of ESPN.com views Coleman and Ty Johnson as the top options in the Jets backfield to open the season.
Analysis: Cimini believes Michael Carter (undisclosed) and La'Mical Perine (foot) will join Coleman and Johnson on the 53-man roster, but the latter two have separated themselves as the frontrunners in what's expected to be a committee. Perine is Coleman's biggest competition for prized goal-line touches, while Johnson and Carter have more burst than power. Carter and Perine are both battling minor injuries heading into Week 1, further solidifying Coleman and Johnson as the top two options early on.

Gets start in preseason win
Coleman gained 19 rushing yards on four carries and lost one yard while catching his only target in Saturday's preseason win over the Packers.
Analysis: While the numbers weren't impressive, Coleman did get the start for the Jets and appears to be solidifying his spot at the top of the depth chart. The team seems likely to use a committee at running back during the regular season however, and rookie Michael Carter is arguably the most talented member of the backfield despite being the fourth back on the field during Saturday's game, so Coleman's role may not translate into a great deal of touch volume.

Coleman didn't play in Saturday's preseason opener against the Giants.
Analysis: Coleman battled a knee injury last season, so the Jets aren't taking any chances with his health, at least not in the first week of preseason. In the first unofficial depth chart compiled by the Jets' communications department, Coleman is listed as the team's top running back, Eric Allen of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Coleman is followed on the posted depth chart by La'Mical Perine, Ty Johnson and rookie Michael Carter. Allen suggests that the Jets figure to employ a "backfield by committee all season long," and with that in mind Coleman should have a role in the team's backfield from the get-go. Coleman's working with the starters to begin OTAs but is splitting reps with Ty Johnson and Michael Carter, Connor Hughes of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: It looks like the Jets are headed for a running back by committee approach, but Coleman appears to be the front-runner to head up that committee. Hughes added that Coleman seems to have put last season's injury troubles behind him. Likely part of committee
Coleman is listed among the backups on the Jets' running back depth chart put together by Tyler Calvaruso of USA Today.
Analysis: Coleman has familiarity with offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur's system, but Calvaruso believes Ty Johnson has the early upper hand in the crowded Jets backfield after his strong finish to the 2020 season. LaFleur likes to take a committee approach in the backfield, so Coleman likely will share the workload with Johnson, as well as rookie fourth-rounder Michael Carter and possibly La'Mical Perine or Josh Adams.

Coleman was limited to 28 carries for 53 yards over eight games this season.
Analysis: Coleman's production took a huge nosedive in his age-27 season, as he was pushed into a reserve role and averaged just 1.9 yards per carry (worst mark of his career). The fact that the veteran was bypassed by his current head coach (and former offensive coordinator in Atlanta) when injuries opened up the starting role at various points of the year is a sign that the back's skills have diminished. Analysis: Jeff Wilson Jr. (23 touches for 204 total yards and a touchdown) dominated the backfield workload after Raheem Mostert (ankle) was placed on IR earlier this week. Neither Coleman (seven offensive snaps) nor Jerick McKinnon (10 snaps) were involved enough in the gameplan to warrant fantasy consideration. Analysis: In what was the 27-year-old's first appearance since Nov. 1, Coleman struggled in a limited workload coming off a knee injury. The game script reduced Coleman's potential involvement with San Francisco falling into a 17-point third-quarter deficit, but it was clear Raheem Mostert (nine carries) and Jeff Wilson (seven carries) remained the preferred RB options for coach Kyle Shanahan. Coleman (knee) wasn't listed on Thursday's practice report, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: After Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson were activated from IR last week, the 49ers backfield is getting healthier by the week with Coleman logging a full session himself Thursday. It'll be interesting to see how much work Coleman will be afforded Sunday against the Bills, but in his three appearances this season he's mustered just 2.4 YPC on his 21 rushes. It isn't clear he'll have a significant role when he returns, as the Niners may also have Raheem Mostert (ankle) back from IR at that point. Placed on IR
Coleman (knee) was placed on injured reserve Saturday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: It's not entirely surprising to see Coleman wind up on injured reserve given his expected timeline for return could be potentially in the month-long range, and it's certainly longer than injured teammate Raheem Mostert (knee). JaMycal Hasty was called up from the practice squad to provide depth at running back, but it certainly looks as if Sunday's matchup against the Giants will feature plenty of Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson, particularly with backup QB Nick Mullens set to lead the offense…read more

Likely out longer than Mostert
Coleman (knee) is expected to miss more time than teammate Raheem Mostert (knee), Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Both players are recovering from knee sprains, and both have been ruled out for Sunday's game in New York. That leaves Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson to handle the backfield work, though undrafted rookie JaMycal Hasty likely will be called up from the practice squad to provide depth. Coach Kyle Shanahan said Coleman is expected to miss about four weeks, making him a candidate for injured reserve.

Won't play Sunday
Coleman (knee) was ruled out for Sunday's game against the Giants, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Coach Kyle Shanahan said earlier in the week the 27-year-old is expected to be sidelined four weeks after suffering the knee sprain during last Sunday's win over the Jets, so it's no surprise he won't be available. Coleman could be placed on injured reserve in the coming days, which would take him off the regular-season roster for at least three weeks. Raheem Mostert (knee) also is out, leaving Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson to lead the 49ers backfield.

Likely out four weeks
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that Coleman (knee) will likely miss four weeks and is a candidate to be placed on injured reserve, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Both Coleman and Raheem Mostert picked up sprained knees this past Sunday against the Jets, and Shanahan indicated the former's injury is worse than the latter's, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com. With a roster move expected to occur at some point this week, the 49ers backfield may be whittled down to just Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson in the short term. JaMycal Hasty is a candidate to receive a promotion from the Niners' practice squad.

Expected to miss a few weeks
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Coleman (knee) is expected to miss "multiple weeks," Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Coleman picked up his knee injury Week 2 versus the Jets, a contest wherein backfield mate Raheem Mostert (knee) also suffered a sprained MCL that's expected to sideline him for Sunday's game against the Giants. If Coleman and Mostert are both held out versus New York, Jerick McKinnon will slot in as the lead option in San Francisco's backfield. Hurts knee in Week 2 win
Coleman left Sunday's 31-13 win over the Jets due to a knee injury, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports. He rushed 14 times for 12 yards and caught both of his targets for 28 yards before exiting.
Analysis: After having his Week 1 workload limited for precautionary reasons due to the poor air quality in the San Francisco area, Coleman had more than half of the team's 27 carries as Raheem Mostert (knee) exited at halftime. If Mostert or Coleman can't go against the Giants in Week 3, Jerick McKinnon would lead the 49ers' run-heavy attack, with Jeff Wilson also mixing in.

Receives five touches in opener
Coleman carried four times for 18 yards and caught one of two targets for six additional yards during Sunday's 24-20 loss to the Cardinals.
Analysis: Coleman considered sitting out Sunday's game due to a preexisting condition that could have been exacerbated by the poor air quality but ultimately decided to suit up. He watched as Raheem Mostert took on the majority of the workload out of the backfield while accounting for 151 scrimmage yards. Coleman's track record of inefficiency could catch up to him this season, as Mostert has already staked his claim to the lead back role. Suiting up Week 1
Coleman (personal) is active for Sunday's game versus the Cardinals, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: There was talk of Coleman taking a seat in the opener due to a preexisting condition, as the air quality index in Santa Clara is particularly high at the moment. Having said that, the 49ers won't err on the side of caution, and Coleman will be available to the backfield Week 1. He may merely be insurance, though, with the rest of the team's running backs (Raheem Mostert, Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson) healthy and available.

Could be game-time call Week 1
Coleman appears to be trending toward a game-time decision Sunday against the Cardinals, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Coleman has a preexisting health condition, and the air quality index in Santa Clara is ringing in at 171 on Sunday morning. He was already deemed uncertain to play if that number is above 150, and the game itself may be postponed if it rises above 200. As a result, Coleman doesn't seem likely to suit up Week 1, which would allow Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson to get more work behind starter Raheem Mostert.

Could sit out due to air quality
Coleman was held out of Friday's practice due to a preexisting health condition, and he could miss Sunday's game against the Cardinals if the air quality index (AQI) in Santa Clara remains at 150 or higher, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: There's even some concern about the game being relocated or postponed if the AQI is above 200 on Sunday. Coleman, who has sickle cell trait, could opt to sit out if the AQI is somewhere in the 150-200 range. The 49ers would then turn to Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson as their depth options in the backfield behind Raheem Mostert.

Coleman has completely recovered from offseason shoulder surgery, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.
Analysis: Coleman suffered the shoulder injury deep into the 49ers' unsuccessful bid for a championship last season, and the surgery reportedly went off without a hitch. Maiocco also mentions that the veteran tailback was contemplating sitting out the 2020 season due to his sickle cell trait potentially posing a greater risk if he contracted COVID-19. Backfield picture clears up
Coleman is lined up to be a part of the 49ers' backfield picture following the trade of Matt Breida to Miami during the 2020 NFL Draft, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Raheem Mostert is the clear front runner to begin the 2020 season as the 49ers' top rushing option following a dominant postseason run, but Breida's departure puts Coleman in a favorable position to be the 1B to Mostert's 1A in coach Kyle Shanahan's two-back system. Analysis: The $2 million switched from an injury guarantee to a full guarantee Apr. 1, accounting for 44 percent of Coleman's $4.55 million base salary in the second season of a two-year, $8.5 million contract. This all but ensures he won't be released, though it wouldn't come as any surprise if the 49ers were to trade Coleman or Matt Breida before Week 1. The Niners also sprinkled in Jeff Wilson for a handful of snaps and one reception, while Matt Breida strictly played special teams. Coleman (shoulder) was a full participant in Friday's practice, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Coleman kicked off the week with back-to-back limited practice sessions, and having now successfully practiced without restrictions serves to shed any lingering doubts about his availability for Super Bowl LIV. Though Raheem Mostert is the favorite to lead San Francisco's backfield Sunday, Coleman will likely play a key role as the 49ers' No. 2 option. Remains limited at practice
Coleman (shoulder) was a limited practice participant Thursday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Coleman previously was a limited participant Wednesday, taking a step forward after he was a non-participant last week. He seems to be gearing up for an appearance in the Super Bowl, but it won't come as any surprise if he's listed as 'questionable' on the final injury report Friday afternoon. Regardless, Raheem Mostert is the favorite to serve as San Francisco's lead runner in the big game.

Upgrades to limited practice
Coleman (shoulder) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
Analysis: Coleman was listed as a non-participant in practice all last week, so Wednesday's limited session represents a tangible step forward for the running back. He's working to recover from the dislocated shoulder sustained during the NFC Championship Game victory over Green Bay. If the 26-year-old is able to gain medical clearance in time to suit up for the Super Bowl 54 matchup with Kansas City, he'll likely play second fiddle to Raheem Mostert in San Francisco's backfield.

Results of MRI encouraging
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that Coleman, who worked on the side during practice, received favorable MRI results on his dislocated shoulder, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Coleman logged three straight DNPs in practice this week, and Shanahan said "we'll see" when asked about ramping up his activity next week. The 26-year-old will have three more chances to log at least a limited session leading up to the Super Bowl against Kansas City. If he's able to gain medical clearance and suit up, Coleman will likely serve as the No. 2 option in San Francisco's backfield behind Raheem Mostert.

Working with training staff
Coleman (shoulder) remained limited to stretching and side work with the training staff Friday at practice, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Coleman is only five days removed from a shoulder dislocation and has another nine days to get ready for the Super Bowl. His practice participation next week should provide a better clue, with the running back likely to gut it out if the injury is simply a matter of pain tolerance/management. Coleman likely would serve as the No. 2 running back behind Raheem Mostert, while Matt Breida and Jeff Wilson would be candidates for backup work in the event of a Coleman absence.

Coleman (shoulder) was limited to side work during Thursday's practice, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Coleman also missed Wednesday's practice, requiring some rest after he suffered a shoulder dislocation in Sunday's 37-20 win over the Packers. He still has 10 days to get ready for the Super Bowl, but his availability for the big game is far from a sure thing. Coleman (shoulder) was listed as a non-participant on Wednesday's estimated injury report, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Coleman's potential workload, or lack thereof, is expected after he dislocated his right shoulder Sunday during the first half of the 49ers' eventual 37-20 victory against the Packers in the NFC Championship Game. Rehab likely will be his focus during the two weeks of preparation for the Super Bowl, but an appearance on the field during that span would be a great sign for his ability to suit up versus the Chiefs. Still, he "expects him [Coleman] to have a good chance to play" in the Super Bowl versus the Chiefs on Feb. 2. More competition for reps
Coleman is welcoming back Matt Breida (ankle) to the 49ers' backfield Sunday at New Orleans, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Coleman received his normal workload in Weeks 11 and 12 en route to 28 touches for 126 yards from scrimmage and one TD. In Week 13 at Baltimore, though, Coleman was usurped by Raheem Mostert, seeing just six touches to the latter's 21. The reintroduction of Breida further clouds Coleman's potential to produce. especially against a Saints defense that has allowed just 3.5 yards per carry and 97.6 yards from scrimmage per game to running backs in 12 outings this season.
