Undergoes surgery
McCain had surgery recently to repair his season-ending shoulder injury, Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: McCain's season ended after suffering this injury in Week 11's loss to Buffalo, and he was spotted wearing a sling in the locker room. There's no indication that his status for the 2020 season is in jeopardy. Eric Rowe and Adrian Colbert are both expected to continue starting at safety until Steven Parker (groin) returns.

Done for season
McCain (shoulder) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday.
Analysis: McCain left this last Sunday's loss to the Bills with a shoulder injury, and it's serious enough to shut down the 26-year-old for the rest of the year. The Dolphins placed Reshad Jones (undisclosed) on IR as well, so the team will be without both of its starting safeties moving forward. At this point, there's no indication that McCain won't be ready for the 2020 season. Steven Parker and Eric Rowe figure to take over starting duties going forward.

Gets hurt Sunday
McCain (shoulder) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Bills, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: McCain looked to suffer the injury late in the second quarter on a Josh Allen scramble and he came up lame on his shoulder. He'll receive extra treatment before trying to return, and, in his stead, look for Walt Aikens to take over as the team's strong safety.

Picks off Hoyer
McCain racked up three tackles (three solo) and an interception in Sunday's win over the Colts.
Analysis: McCain was one of three Dolphins to intercept Hoyer on Sunday, when he took an errant pass late in the second quarter that set up a touchdown on the next drive. The 26-year-old hasn't quite proven to be an IDP commodity this season, however, making just 22 tackles (16 solo) and two interceptions in eight games. He'll get a great chance to nab another pass next week against the Bills, as quarterback Josh Allen has already thrown seven interceptions this year.

Cleared to play
McCain (shoulder) won't carry an injury tag into Monday's game against the Steelers.
Analysis: McCain was limited in practice all week, but he'll be good to go for the prime-time game. The fourth-year pro has been an every-down player this year, registering 17 tackles over five games. He'll be tasked with slowing down quarterback Mason Rudolph and running back James Conner.

Limited again
McCain (shoulder) was limited in Friday's practice, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: McCain has been carrying this shoulder injury for over a month now, so he's not in any real danger of missing Monday's game against the Steelers. He should slot into an every-down role yet again, where he has 17 tackles in five games.

Won't receive suspension
McCain (shoulder) won't face a suspension from the team for his incident with a fan last week and will be allowed to play Monday against the Steelers, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: McCain began the week as a limited practice participant due to the shoulder issue so he could still end up on the injury report for Monday's game. The Dolphins disciplined McCain internally for the incident with the fan, and the NFL believes that discipline to be sufficient, per the Buffalo News.

Ready to go
McCain (hamstring/shoulder) does not have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Bills, Hal Habib of The Palm Beach Post reports.
Analysis: McCain was limited in practice all week due to two injuries, but he's on track to draw his usual start versus the Bills on Sunday. He was able to play through both issues Week 6 against the Redskins.

Listed as questionable
McCain (hamstring/shoulder) is officially questionable for Sunday's game against the Redskins, Safid Deen of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Analysis: McCain wasn't able to fully shake his hamstring and shoulder injuries during Miami's bye week. Coming off three limited practice sessions, McCain's availability for Sunday's contest could come down to the wire. The Dolphins will officially release inactives 90 minutes before Sunday's 1:00 p.m. EST kickoff.

Not playing Sunday
McCain (hamstring/shoulder) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Chargers, Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: McCain closed out the week with a pair of limited practices, but the Dolphins ultimately decided he needed more time off to overcome the two injuries. His absence will leave the secondary without a key starter, though the Dolphins will benefit from getting fellow safety Reshad Jones (ankle) back from a two-week absence.

Draws questionable tag
McCain (shoulder/hamstring) is officially listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Chargers, Hal Habib of The Palm Beach Post reports.
Analysis: McCain has logged two consecutive limited practice sessions, and he appears to be progressing in his recovery from shoulder and hamstring injuries. He'll play his usual starting role in Miami's secondary if cleared to go. Walt Aikens would likely slot into the starting lineup if McCain were forced to miss any time.

Held out of practice
McCain (hamstring/shoulder) did not practice Wednesday.
Analysis: McCain appears to have picked up multiple injuries versus the Cowboys in Week 3, during which he played 67 of 72 possible snaps on defense and recorded his first interception of the season. If McCain is able to get healthy in time for Sunday's tilt against the Chargers, he'll be set for another start.

Record first INT of season
McCain made five tackles (three solo), two pass breakups and an interception in Sunday's loss to the Cowboys.
Analysis: McCain played 67 of 72 possible defensive snaps (93 percent), and he's locked into this large of a role with Minkah Fitzpatrick in Pittsburgh. He was able to capitalize on the opportunity with his first turnover of the season. McCain will look to keep up the success versus the Chargers in Week 4.

Ready to go Week 3
McCain (shoulder) is active for Sunday's Week 3 tilt against the Cowboys.
Analysis: As he did last week, McCain will shed his questionable tag and suit up in his usual strong safety role. With position mate Reshad Jones (ankle) sitting once again in Week 3 and Minkah Fitzpatrick now in Pittsburgh, McCain should remain about as busy as he was in Week 2 versus the Patriots, when he logged 68 snaps and seven tackles (five assisted).

Considered questionable
The Dolphins have listed McCain (shoulder) as questionable for Sunday's contest against the Cowboys, Alaln Poupart of the team's official website reports.
Analysis: With Reshad Jones (ankle) out and Minkah Fitzpatrick traded earlier in the week, the Dolphins project to be thin at safety. Thus, McCain could play a big role if he is ultimately able to suit up. If he is not, look for Walt Aikens, Doug MIddleton, and Steven Parker to see much bigger roles than they anticipated heading into the season.

Posts seven tackles in loss
McCain recorded seven tackles (five solo) during Sunday's 43-0 loss to the Patriots.
Analysis: McCain was a rare bright spot for Miami's defense during Sunday's blowout loss. The 26-year-old was initially listed as questionable for Week 2 due to a shoulder injury, but he managed to play 68 snaps on defense and looks back to full health.

Ready to rock
McCain (shoulder) is officially listed as active for Sunday's game against the Patriots.
Analysis: McCain was a limited participant in practice all week leading up to Sunday's divisional tilt. It appears as though 26-year-old will play through his shoulder issue, as he did Week 1, and work to contain New England's aerial attack.

Questionable for Sunday
McCain (shoulder) is considered questionable for Sunday's matchup with the Patriots, Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: McCain was limited in practice each day this week. The 26-year-old logged three limited practices last week as well, but he was able to suit up for the season opener and play 59 defensive snaps. If McCain ultimately can't suit up Sunday, Walt Aikens would likely take over the starting role at strong safety.

Will play Sunday
McCain (shoulder) is active for Sunday's game against the Ravens.
Analysis: McCain was only able to log limited practices each day this week, but as evidenced by this news, is healthy enough for Sunday's game. He and Reshad Jones will slide in as the starting safety duo tasked with slowing down Lamar Jackson and the rest of the Baltimore offense.

Questionable for Sunday
McCain (shoulder) is considered questionable for Sunday's tilt with Baltimore.
Analysis: McCain was limited in all three practices this week. The 26-year-old began making the switch from cornerback to safety toward the end of last season. McCain figures to see a lot of reps at strong safety this season when healthy. Walt Aikens would seemingly be next in line if McCain can't play Sunday.

Transitions to safety
McCain is taking reps at the safety position during training camp, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: McCain began the switch from cornerback to safety toward the end of the 2018 campaign, and it appears that his new role will stick. The 2015 fifth-round pick logged 61 tackles (50 solo), two sacks, five passes defended and one interception last season. If McCain indeed plays the full 2019 season as a safety, he'll see increased tackle opportunities.

Practicing in full for OTAs
McCain (ankle) was a full participant during Wednesday's OTA session, Safid Deen of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Analysis: McCain sustained an ankle injury in Week 17 against the Bills, but seems to have made a full recovery. The cornerback was lining up as a pseudo-free safety in Wednesday's session, a role that could increase his chances of posting IDP-relevant statistics.

Injures ankle Sunday
McCain sustained an ankle injury during Sunday's game against the Bills, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: McCain hurt his ankle on a play that devolved into a fight, resulting in the ejection of teammates Kiko Alonso and Robert Quinn. With Reshad Jones (leg) questionable to return, and T.J. McDonald (ankle) and Xavien Howard (knee) inactive, the Dolphins could be without a single starting member of their secondary if McCain does not retake the field.

Another sack Sunday
McCain recorded seven tackles (four solo) and a sack across 81 defensive snaps in Sunday's win over the Patriots.
Analysis: McCain now has a sack in back-to-back contests. He has 48 tackles while playing in 72 percent of the defensive snaps on the season. He'll look to help contain Kirk Cousins and the Vikings passing-attack this Sunday.

Posts first sack of season in win
McCain logged four tackles (all solo) and one sack during Sunday's 21-17 win over the Bills.
Analysis: McCain logged yet another solid performance in pass coverage and brought down opposing quarterback Josh Allen as his first sack of the season. The fourth-year pro remains a key piece of Miami's defense but is difficult to trust in IDP formats due to a low weekly tackle volume.

McCain is absent from Wednesday's injury report, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports.

McCain (concussion) made it through concussion protocol Wednesday, Safid Deen of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

McCain (concussion) is participating in some form during Tuesday's practice, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: McCain took a strong blindside block in Week 10 against the Packers and was placed in concussion protocol following the hit. Under concussion protocol
McCain is under concussion protocol, but the cornerback is believed to have avoided serious injury, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: McCain was on the wrong end of a vicious blindside block during Sunday's game in Green Bay, and it wouldn't surprise many witnesses of the play if the cornerback was forced to miss time. Fortunately, the Dolphins are on bye in Week 11, which allows McCain roughly two weeks of rest to get ready for Miami's Week 12 date with Buffalo.

Exits game with head injury
McCain exited Sunday's game against the Packers due to a head injury and will not return, Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports.

Avoids concussion
McCain is not in the concussion protocol and is cleared to play, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports.

McCain is being evaluated for a concussion following Sunday's 13-6 win over the Jets, Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: McCain served as a key part of Miami's secondary, which shut down the Jets' passing offense Week 9, but may have suffered a concussion during the win. If the starting cornerback were to miss any time, Cornell Armstrong could benefit from an increased defensive workload.
