Let go by San Fran
Thomas was released by the 49ers on Tuesday.
Analysis: Thomas originally joined the 49ers in June after spending the past four seasons with the Commanders. The 33-year-old was then released Aug. 9 before re-signing with the team Thursday, but he did not make it through San Francisco's final cutdown to the 53-man roster. Thomas could be a candidate to come back on the practice squad, otherwise he'll look for an opportunity elsewhere ahead of the regular season. Meanwhile, Jake Tonges should serve as the 49ers' top backup behind George Kittle.

Back with San Francisco
The 49ers re-signed Thomas on Thursday.
Analysis: The 49ers cut Thomas earlier this month, but he's back with the team to provide depth behind top tight end George Kittle. In that context, Thomas' initial fantasy upside is limited, but the 33-year-old did catch 55 passes with the Commanders last season and could provide streaming value in the event that Kittle misses time.

Surprise cut by San Francisco
The 49ers released Thomas (hamstring) on Friday.
Analysis: Thomas inked a one-year deal with San Francisco back in June and appeared set to provide the team with valuable veteran depth behind top tight end George Kittle, so it's somewhat surprising to see him be released two weeks into training camp. A hamstring injury had kept Thomas out of practice for roughly the last week, but unless he's reached an injury settlement, his release indicates a clean bill of health. Thomas will now look for an opportunity elsewhere in the league, likely as a backup or…read more

Hamstring injury halts practicing
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan announced Friday that Thomas is currently missing practice with a hamstring injury, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Thomas signed with San Francisco back in early June after playing out the last four seasons with Washington. The severity of the tight end's hamstring problem has not been disclosed, but more information should be released in the near future.

In line to sign with 49ers
The 49ers are slated to sign Thomas to a contract, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: A quarterback in college, Thomas has come into his own as a tight end the past four seasons with Washington, hauling in 72 passes in 2020 and 55 last year. Overall, he averaged 9.2 YPC and 6.1 YPT and scored 14 touchdowns on 274 targets in 52 games during that span. With San Francisco, Thomas will provide a veteran presence in its TE room behind starter George Kittle.

Being cut by Commanders
Washington announced the release of Thomas on Friday, saving the team roughly $6.5 million in cap space.
Analysis: Thomas' release leaves the Commanders with about $1.7 million in dead cap space. The veteran tight end is heading into his age-33 season but logged a solid bounce-back effort in 2023, having secured 55 of 79 targets for 496 yards and four scores across 16 regular-season games. A proven contributor capable of moving the chains on offense, Thomas should garner real interest on the free agent market, though he's not guaranteed a chance at a true starting role at this point in his career.…read more

Rebounds in age-32 season
Thomas caught 55 of 79 targets for 496 yards and four touchdowns in 2023.
Analysis: Thomas suffered an Achilles tear in 2021 and then had only 323 yards and one touchdown in 14 games last season. He bounced back some as a 32-year-old, missing just one game and ultimately posting a receiving line pretty similar to teammate Jahan Dotson's. Many expected QB Sam Howell to really focus on getting the ball to Dotson and Terry McLaurin, but the target distribution ended up being fairly wide in Year 1 under OC Eric Bieniemy (who remains with the team for now, although that could…read more

Three grabs in loss
Thomas caught three of four targets for 20 yards in Sunday's 27-10 loss to the 49ers.
Analysis: Thomas played 28 of the Commanders' 46 offensive snaps Sunday, while backup tight end John Bates was on the field for just three fewer snaps. The veteran Thomas now has 54 catches for 487 yards and four touchdowns in 15 games, his highest marks in each category since the 2020 season.

Finds end zone against Jets
Thomas caught five of six targets for 36 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 30-28 loss to the Jets.
Analysis: The tight end caught the only TD pass of the day for a Washington quarterback, connecting with Jacoby Brissett on a 15-yard strike late in the third quarter after Sam Howell had been benched once again. It was Thomas' fourth touchdown of the season but his first since late October, and he could be a more appealing fantasy option in Week 17 against the 49ers if Commanders coach Ron Rivera makes the call to give the start to Brissett.

Held to one catch
Thomas caught one of three targets for seven yards in a 28-20 loss to the Rams on Sunday.
Analysis: After averaging 4.3 catches for 40.9 yards and 0.3 TDs in his first 10 appearances this year, Thomas has just three catches for 22 yards on eight targets over his past three games. Next up is a Week 16 matchup with the Jets.

Held catchless
Thomas finished without a catch on one target in a 45-15 loss to Miami on Sunday.
Analysis: Thomas enters a Week 14 bye having just posted two of his three worst fantasy performances of the season in back-to-back weeks. It hasn't cost him snaps and routes, but there is some chance the Commanders give Cole Turner some of those reps now that a playoff appearance is out of the question and plans for 2024 become a consideration. That said, Thomas still is the clear favorite to lead the team's TEs in snaps, routes and targets when the Commanders return from their bye for a Week 15 road…read more

Held to 15 yards
Thomas caught two of four targets for 15 yards in Thursday's 45-10 loss to Dallas.
Analysis: Thomas turned in his second-worst fantasy performance in 11 appearances this season, following five straight games with at least four catches and 31 yards. He's now averaging 4.1 receptions for 38.5 yards and 0.27 touchdowns on 5.6 targets for the campaign heading into a Week 13 home game against the Dolphins.

Tallies 58 yards
Thomas recorded five receptions on eight targets for 58 yards in Sunday's 31-19 loss to the Giants. He also lost a fumble.
Analysis: Thomas tied for second on the team in receptions with Terry McLaurin. He made good use of the opportunity by topping 50 receiving yards for the third time this season, due in large part to a 29-yard reception late in the first quarter. However, Thomas also contributed to some of the team's misfortune on the scoreboard, as his fumble led directly to a Giants touchdown. In addition, all three of his uncaught targets were intercepted. Despite those miscues, Thomas should remain a key part of the…read more

Thomas hauled in all five of his targets for 40 yards in Sunday's 29-26 loss to Seattle.
Analysis: Thomas continued his solid play as the Commanders' starter this season with his sixth game recording 40 or more yards through 10 weeks this season. The veteran tight end surpassed the 311 receiving yards he logged over 14 games with Washington last season, accomplishing the personal feat in five fewer games. Hauls in four passes
Thomas caught four of six targets for 31 yards in Sunday's 20-17 win at New England.
Analysis: It was Thomas' third straight game with at least six targets and four catches, following a one-target outing Week 6 at Atlanta. His overall averages of 4.1 catches for 38.9 yards per game at least keep him on the map as a streaming option or bye-week replacement ahead of a Week 10 contest in Seattle.

Logs full practice Thursday
Thomas (heel) was a full practice participant Thursday.
Analysis: One day removed from having a cap on his reps due to a heel injury Wednesday, Thomas was able to handle all on-field work. He's thus on pace to face a Patriots defense Sunday that has conceded the 10th-most yards per targets (7.7) to opposing tight ends this season.

Tending to heel issue
Thomas was a limited participant in practice Wednesday due to a heel injury.
Analysis: Thomas sat out Week 3 with a concussion, but he's otherwise been available to the Commanders offense this season, posting at least 40 receiving yards on five occasions and scoring three touchdowns in his seven appearances. His overall receiving line sits at 29-280-3 on 40 targets near the midpoint of the campaign, but it's unclear if he'll be able to add to it Sunday in New England. The team's last two Week 9 practice reports will be telling for Thomas' upcoming availability.

Productive day in Week 8 loss
Thomas brought in six of eight targets for 44 yards and a touchdown in the Commanders' 38-31 loss to the Eagles on Sunday.
Analysis: The veteran tight end had been somewhat quiet since his season-best 9-77-1 line in Week 5 against the Bears, but he was an important part of a career-best passing day for Sam Howell on Sunday. Thomas also found the end zone for the third time this season and for the first time since that game against Chicago when he hauled in a seven-yard touchdown pass from Howell early in the fourth quarter. Thomas will next take aim at the Patriots' spotty pass defense in a Week 9 road matchup.

Four grabs in Sunday's loss
Thomas caught four of six targets for 51 yards in Sunday's 14-7 loss to the Giants.
Analysis: The tight end produced his second-highest yardage total of the season on a day when Sam Howell was once again facing near-constant pressure. Thomas has been able to stay mostly healthy so far in 2023, missing only one game, and as a result he's on pace for his best season since his breakout 2020 campaign.

Targeted once
Thomas caught his lone target for a two-yard gain in Sunday's 24-16 win over Atlanta.
Analysis: Thomas saw at least three targets in each of his previous four games this year, including 11 the week before in a loss to Chicago. He should see multiple targets Week 7 against the Giants but isn't an especially trustworthy fantasy option even after a solid start to the season.

Season-best effort in loss
Thomas brought in nine of 11 targets for 77 yards and a touchdown in the Commanders' 40-20 loss to the Bears on Thursday night. He also lost a fumble.
Analysis: The veteran tight end was in vintage form during a game in which Sam Howell was forced to put the ball up 51 times, leading the Commanders in receptions, receiving yards and targets. Thomas' lost fumble didn't lead to any Bears points, and his catch total for the night actually matched the one he came in with for the entire season. With his first big game of the campaign under his belt, Thomas will next take aim at the Falcons in a Week 6 road matchup Sunday, Oct. 15.

Catches three passes in loss
Thomas secured all three of his targets for 41 yards in Sunday's 34-31 overtime loss to the Eagles.
Analysis: Thomas returned from a concussion for Sunday's matchup with the Eagles and returned to his usual role as the team's top tight end. The veteran played 79 percent of Washington's offensive snaps, far ahead of both John Bates and Cole Turner. Though his final line wasn't especially exciting, Thomas' involvement in the offense in his return was a promising sight. Thomas gets a favorable matchup in Week 5, when the Commanders take on a struggling Bears pass defense in a Thursday night game.

Thomas (concussion) will be available to play Sunday against the Eagles, Matthew Paras of The Washington Times reports.
Analysis: After missing a week of practice and one game, Thomas returned to limited practice participation Wednesday before upgrading to full activity Thursday. He now heads into Sunday without an injury designation, pushing fellow Washington tight ends Cole Turner and John Bates back to complementary roles. Analysis: It's unclear if Thomas has made his way through the five phases of the concussion protocol, but he told Sam Fortier of The Washington Post after Wednesday's limited session that he expects to return to action Sunday at Philadelphia. The Commanders may clear up Thomas' status for Week 4 upon the release of Friday's injury report, but he appears on pace to make his first appearance since Week 2 this weekend.

Expects to play this week
Thomas (concussion) was a limited practice participant Wednesday and said afterward that he expects to play in Sunday's game against Philadelphia, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Thomas missed last Sunday's 37-3 loss to Buffalo, leaving Cole Turner and John Bates in a timeshare at tight end. Bates should still have a role as a blocker if Thomas is back for Week 4, while Turner's usefulness would be minimized with the return of a more experienced receiving-minded tight end. Thomas drew 11 targets through the first six quarters of play this season before suffering a concussion Week 2.

Won't play this week
Thomas (concussion) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against Buffalo, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Thomas didn't practice this week after an early exit from last Sunday's 35-33 win over Denver. He's seen 11 targets in six quarters of action this season, but there's no guarantee of similar involvement for the backup tight ends with both John Bates and Cole Turner likely to play a lot.

Officially DNP on Thursday
Thomas (concussion) officially didn't practice Thursday.
Analysis: This comes as no surprise after Thomas wasn't seen during the media-access portion of the session. He'll thus have just one more chance to show that he's progressing through the concussion protocol, which he's currently in due to a helmet-to-helmet hit that he took from Broncos safety Kareem Jackson this past Sunday. If Thomas is unable to suit up Week 3 against the Bills, John Bates and Cole Turner will be the Commanders' primary tight ends this Sunday.

Not seen at practice Thursday
Thomas (concussion) wasn't spotted during the open part of Thursday's practice, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Assuming he goes down as a non-participant for a second consecutive session, Thomas seemingly doesn't have enough time to make his way through the concussion protocol and be able to suit up Sunday against the Bills. If that comes to pass, the Commanders will turn to John Bates and Cole Turner at tight end for as long as Thomas is sidelined.

Analysis: Thomas entered the concussion protocol late in the second quarter of Sunday's 35-33 win over Denver after safety Kareem Jackson was ejected for hitting him in the helmet at the end of a touchdown catch. Thomas is dealing with his first documented concussion since entering the NFL in 2014, but he's still uncertain to be fully cleared ahead of Sunday's matchup with Buffalo. Thomas (concussion) won't return to Sunday's game in Denver.
Analysis: Thomas was on the receiving end of a helmet-to-helmet hit from Broncos safety Kareem Jackson during his touchdown catch late in the second quarter. With the team ruling him out, Thomas will finish Week 2 with two catches (on three targets) for 22 yards and one touchdown. He'll now be subject to the protocol for head injuries, which will determine whether or not he'll be available next Sunday against the Bills. Busy in season debut
Thomas caught four of his team-high eight targets for 43 yards in Sunday's 20-16 win over Arizona.
Analysis: In addition to his surprising team lead in targets, the 32-year-old tight end played 82 percent of snaps on offense, not far behind WRs Terry McLaurin (89 percent) and Jahan Dotson (87 percent). The Commanders undoubtedly want more of the targets going to those two, and the Cardinals were a particularly good matchup for the tight end, but Thomas could still average a handful of looks per week or even slightly more if he's able to stay on the field. Good to go for opener
Thomas (calf) wasn't listed Wednesday on the Commanders' Week 1 injury report.
Analysis: Thomas' absence from the injury report confirms that he's completed his recovery from the calf strain that kept him out of practice and preseason games for nearly all of August. He'll likely reclaim his role as the team's top receiving tight end this Sunday against the Cardinals, though he could cede a few routes and snaps to Cole Turner as well as blocking tight end John Bates.

Thomas (calf) is working his way back into practice and could have a major role under new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Cole Turner had a busy preseason filling in with the first-team offense, but Thomas is still expected to get most of those snaps/targets once the games count. It sounds like the 32-year-old is on track for Week 1 against Arizona despite missing most of training camp and all three preseason games. Analysis: Thomas hasn't practiced with teammates since at least Aug. 3 and seems likely to miss a third straight preseason game when the Commanders host the Bengals on Saturday. Analysis: Thomas hasn't practiced for the past week and likely will miss time beyond Friday. He struggled last season and is scheduled for a non-guaranteed $6.28 million base salary this year, but the Commanders seemingly intend to give him another shot as their top pass-catching TE. Bothered by calf strain
Thomas missed Friday's practice due to a calf strain, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The Commanders apparently don't consider the injury serious, as coach Ron Rivera used the phrase "an abundance of caution" to explain why Thomas was held out of practice. The 32-year-old tight end doesn't have the stiffest competition in Washington's TE room and seems to be liked by the coaching staff, but his status with the team still feels a bit shaky given that he struggled last season and is now due a non-guaranteed $6.28 million base salary in 2023. Catches one pass in loss
Thomas caught one of three targets for six yards in Sunday's 20-12 loss to the Giants.
Analysis: Thomas operated as the Commanders' No. 1 tight end, playing 40 of the team's 63 offensive snaps in the contest. Unfortunately, the veteran was unable to make the most of limited opportunities. It's been a mostly disappointing season for Thomas, as he is averaging an abysmal 19.6 receiving yards per game and has scored just one touchdown this season. Thomas caught three of four targets for 20 yards in Sunday's 20-20 tie with the Giants.
Analysis: Thomas played 56 percent of offensive snaps, tying a season low from Week 8 when he was in his first game back from a three-week absence due to a calf injury. Thomas has averaged only 1.8 catches for 17.3 yards in five games since his return, unable to make much of a dent in an offense with talented wide receivers and a busy RB duo. Good to go
Thomas (rib) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Giants, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Thomas has been listed with a rib injury for almost a month now and also dealt with an illness last week. He's caught only eight of 16 targets for 84 yards in five games since returning from a three-game absence due to a calf injury, but the Commanders have stuck with him as their top receiving tight end all the same, using Thomas on more than two-thirds of snaps in four straight games.

Remains limited Thursday
Thomas (rib) practiced in a limited capacity Thursday, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Thomas' rib injury has followed him for three weeks in a row, but he's been able to play through it both of the last two games, combining for six catches (on nine targets) for 72 yards while playing 69 percent of the Commanders' snaps. Ultimately, Friday's practice report will reveal whether or not the tight end enters the weekend with a designation for Sunday's contest at the Giants.

Still dealing with rib issue
Thomas (ribs) was a limited practice participant Wednesday, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Thomas played through the rib injury and an illness this past Sunday against Atlanta, catching one pass for seven yards on three targets. He's now played five straight games since missing three in a row with a calf injury, averaging only 1.6 catches for 16.8 yards on 3.2 targets despite playing more than half of Washington's offensive snaps in every game, including 68 percent or better the past four weeks. Quiet against Falcons
Thomas recorded one reception on three targets for seven yards in Sunday's 19-13 win over the Falcons.
Analysis: Thomas played through an injury to his ribs and an illness, perhaps a partial explanation for his poor performance. However, he's managed multiple receptions in only two of his last five games and recorded a combined 84 yards in that span. John Bates was more involved in the Commanders' offense against the Falcons, a potentially ominous sign for Thomas moving forward.

Active against Falcons
Thomas (ribs/illness) is active Week 12 against the Falcons.
Analysis: Despite catching five of six targets for 65 yards in Week 11, Thomas remained bothered by a ribs injury into the practice week, in addition to dealing with an illness. He'll overcome both of those obstacles to suit up Sunday against Atlanta -- a team that has allowed 62 receptions to opposing tight ends this season, which is tied with Miami for the second most in the league.

Likely to play in Week 12
Thomas (ribs/illness) remains listed as questionable but is in line to play Sunday against the Falcons, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: A lingering rib injury followed Thomas into Week 12 prep, limiting him at practice Wednesday and Thursday. An illness then prevented him from doing any on-field work Friday, resulting in him taking a designation into the weekend. Head coach Ron Rivera told John Keim of ESPN.com on Friday that he expected Thomas to be available this weekend, and Schefter's report backs up that assessment. Still, Thomas' status won't be clarified until about 90 minutes before Sunday's 1 p.m. ET kickoff.

Misses practice with illness
Thomas, who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Atlanta, is dealing with an illness in addition to a rib injury, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports.
Analysis: Thomas was a limited practice participant Wednesday and Thursday before sitting out Friday. HIs absence Friday was due to the ailment and not a setback with the rib injury, with head coach Ron Rivera saying after practice that he expects Thomas to play Sunday against the Falcons. If not, the Commanders will be left with John Bates and Cole Turner as their top tight ends ahead of the 1 p.m. ET kickoff.

Expected to play
Thomas (ribs) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Atlanta, with Commanders head coach Ron Rivera noting Friday that he expects Thomas to play, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Thomas managed limited practices Wednesday and Thursday, after catching five of six targets for a team-high 65 yards in last Sunday's win over the Texans. He's otherwise had a quiet season, but he at least runs routes on most of Washington's pass plays whenever he's healthy and has a history of fantasy utility. If Thomas ends up missing the game, which doesn't sound likely, the Commanders will be down to John Bates and Cole Turner at tight end, with the former more of an in-line blocker and the…read more

Thomas (ribs) was listed as limited on Tuesday's practice estimate.
Analysis: Last week, Thomas kicked it off with back-to-back capped sessions, but a full listing Friday cleared him of a designation ahead of this past Sunday's win at Houston. This time around, he's followed a similar regimen through two practice reports, meaning Friday's version may do the same for a Week 12 matchup with the Falcons.

Still bothered by ribs
Thomas (rib) was a limited practice participant Wednesday.
Analysis: He was listed with the same rib injury last week and ended up catching five of six targets for 65 yards in a win over the Texans. Production like that hasn't been the norm for Thomas this season, but he could have more useful weeks ahead as he's further removed from the ACL tear he suffered last year and the calf injury that cost him three weeks earlier this season. The Commanders host the Falcons in Week 12.

Leads team in receiving yardage
Thomas caught five passes for 65 yards on six targets against Houston on Sunday.
Analysis: The Texans corners seemed to get the better of the Washington receivers, with Curtis Samuel and Jahan Dotson combining for just two catches for 23 yards on four targets, and Thomas stepped up accordingly as the defense left him open. It's arguably Thomas' best game of the year so far, so hopefully he can avoid injuries and keep building on his momentum as Washington takes on Atlanta in Week 12.

Analysis: Thomas missed Weeks 5-7 with a calf injury and has caught only two of seven targets for 12 yards in three games since returning. He played 72 and 73 percent of offensive snaps in Washington's past two games, but Taylor Heinicke mostly has focused his attention on WR Terry McLaurin and the team's running backs.

Thomas (ribs) practiced in a limited fashion Thursday.
Analysis: After dealing with knee and calf injuries already this season, Thomas now has a rib issue, which so far has resulted in a cap on his reps in both sessions during Week 11 prep. Analysis: Knee and calf issues have previously resulted in Thomas being listed on injury reports this season, and a new health concern is inhibiting him to kick off Week 11 prep. Analysis: Since missing three straight games from Weeks 5 through 7, Thomas has seen his snap share gradually increase over the Commanders' subsequent three contests. After logging 56 percent of the Commanders' snaps on offense in his return to the lineup Week 8 against the Colts, Thomas bumped up to 70 percent Week 9 versus the Vikings before climbing to 73 percent Monday. No catches despite large snap count
Thomas finished with no catches on two targets in Sunday's 20-17 loss to the Vikings, playing 72 percent of Washington's snaps on offense.
Analysis: It was his second game back from a three-week absence due to a calf injury, and Thomas made it two in a row without a reception despite playing more than half the available snaps in both contests. He averaged 3.3 catches for 26.5 yards on 5.0 targets over the first four weeks of the season, so there is some hope the 31-year-old tight end starts to see more looks Week 10 at Philadelphia or Week 11 at Houston.

Thomas (calf) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Vikings.
Analysis: It remains to be seen if Thomas will take on more work after handling 56 percent of offensive snaps (but zero targets) last week in his first game back from a three-week absence due to a calf injury. He should see a few targets this time around, but the threat of losing snaps/routes to Armani Rogers, John Bates and/or Cole Turner still is present for Thomas.

Thomas (calf) was a limited participant at Thursday's practice, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Though Thomas didn't take a step forward from Wednesday in terms of practice activity, the fact that he was on the field for consecutive days bodes well for his chances of being able to play Sunday against the Vikings. In his return from a three-game absence in the Commanders' Week 8 win over the Colts, Thomas started and played 56 percent of Washington's offense snaps but went without a target.

Thomas (calf) was a limited practice participant Wednesday, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Thomas returned for Sunday's win over Indianapolis after missing three games with a calf injury, and while he took 56 percent of Washington's snaps on offense, the veteran tight end finished without a target. He should see a looks this weekend against the Vikings, assuming he experiences no setbacks with the calf during practice. The every-down role he held in 2020 may be a thing of the past, however.

Not targeted in return from injury
Thomas played 56 percent of the offensive snaps but wasn't targeted in Sunday's 17-16 win over Indianapolis.
Analysis: In his first game back from a three-week absence due to a calf injury, Thomas shared snaps with Armani Rogers (36 percent) and John Bates (33 percent), a duo that combined for three targets. Thomas could see more work in Week 9 against Minnesota considering he handled at least 62 percent of snaps and three or more targets in each of Washington's first four games this season.

Thomas (calf) is working out on a side field rather than practicing with the main group Wednesday, Pete Hailey of NBC Sports Washington reports.
Analysis: The activity is perhaps a sign of progress after two missed games, but Thomas' continued absence from practice leaves him uncertain for a matchup with the Packers on Sunday. The Commanders put rookie Cole Turner in a three-down role at tight end last Thursday against the Bears after No. 2 option John Bates hurt his hamstring in pregame warmups. Scores first TD of season
Thomas caught three of five targets for 37 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 36-27 loss to Detroit.
Analysis: Thomas hasn't quite returned to his every-down role from 2020 and early 2021, but he did play 62 percent of offensive snaps in the season opener (with a 3-45-0 line on six targets) and then 73 percent in Week 2. He's back on the map as a fantasy option after an ACL tear last year, though his modest target share (12.9 percent) suggests there will also be some quiet games when Carson Wentz isn't so busy. Uncertain for Week 1
Thomas (knee) said Monday he's uncertain whether he will suit up for Sunday's regular-season opener against the Jaguars, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Thomas said he's working towards retaking the field "this week or next," so it's also possible Week 2 against Detroit could be his return target. The tight end is recovering from a torn left ACL, but he avoided starting the season on IR and thus looks to have a fair chance of missing less than four games. Analysis: Rivera said Thomas' progression to 7-on-7s was "very important" and "another milestone," adding that "it gives him a chance" to be ready for the season opener. If so, Thomas presumably would be eased in with something less than his familiar every-down role, though an eventual return to that type of workload isn't out of the question given Washington's limited depth at tight end. Placed on PUP
The Commanders placed Thomas (knee) on the active/PUP list Tuesday.
Analysis: Thomas had knee surgery Dec. 17 to address an ACL tear accompanied by MCL and meniscus damage. He resumed jogging in April, but it remains to be seen when he'll be able to practice fully and as a result it won't be any surprise if John Bates is the Week 1 starting tight end for Washington.

Not ready for practice
Thomas (knee) is expected to land on the PUP list for the start of training camp, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Thomas had major knee surgery Dec. 17 and resumed jogging at some point in April. He didn't participate in offseason practices and won't be ready for the start of camp, with Week 1 also a major question mark given the tight end's revelation in April that he'd damaged his MCL and meniscus in addition to an ACL tear. John Bates is the favorite to start at tight end in the event Thomas isn't ready for the opener, and they could form a timeshare if/when they're both healthy.

Recovery going well
Thomas (knee) is progressing well in his recovery from a left ACL tear and has already resumed jogging, Ivan Lambert of USA Today reports.
Analysis: Thomas said "rehab is going very well" from his Dec. 17 surgery, and noted that his recovery is already "at the jogging stage." While it's positive that the starting tight end is currently "a little" ahead of schedule in his recovery, Thomas also revealed that his surgery was more extensive than previously disclosed. "I did ACL, MCL and both of my meniscus," Thomas said of the procedure. The severity and timing of Thomas' injury makes his status for Week 1 uncertain, so second-year pro John…read more

Further testing reveals ACL injury
Thomas (knee) has undergone further testing which revealed an ACL tear, John Keim of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Washington initially feared Thomas had suffered an ACL tear, but follow-up testing led the team to be optimistic the structural damage in his knee had not impacted his ACL. However, after he had already been placed on season-ending IR, further testing has now confirmed the severity of Thomas' injury, for which he's expected to undergo surgery shortly. As a result the tight end, who recently signed a three-year, $24 million extension, faces a more arduous recovery timeframe and may not be back…read more

Officially on IR
Washington placed Thomas (knee) on injured reserve Wednesday, ruling him out for the rest of the 2021 season.
Analysis: Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reported Monday that Thomas' initial MRI revealed that he avoided an ACL tear of his left knee, and while that hasn't been confirmed one way or the other, the tight end is evidently dealing with a serious enough health concern that he'll be done for the season after landing on IR for a second time. While Thomas was on IR earlier this season due to a strained hamstring, Ricky Seals-Jones averaged four catches for 38.4 yards and 0.2 touchdowns on six targets…read more

Washington is expected to place Thomas (knee) on injured reserve later this week, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Though the tight end reportedly received better results than expected after recently undergoing an MRI on the left knee he injured in Sunday's win over the Raiders, he's apparently still dealing with a serious enough of an injury to result on him landing on IR for a second time, which will end his season. Still undergoing tests
Thomas underwent an MRI on his left knee Monday that came back better than the team had hoped, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Although Washington initially believed that Thomas tore his ACL and MCL in Sunday's win over the Raiders, his initial MRI revealed that he didn't suffer an ACL tear. The 30-year-old will undergo further testing to help determine his diagnosis and still appears likely to miss time, but his early test results are slightly encouraging.

Likely done for season
Thomas "likely" tore his ACL and MCL during Sunday's victory over the Raiders, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. He caught three of five targets for 48 yards and a touchdown before departing with the knee injury.
Analysis: Thomas will undergo more tests on his knee when his team returns home from Las Vegas, but the initial reports about Thomas' injury aren't promising. In the likely event Thomas is done for the season, Ricky Seals-Jones (hip) and John Bates will split the bulk of the work at tight end in some fashion.

Injures knee, won't return Sunday
Thomas has been ruled out of Sunday's game at Las Vegas due to an ankle injury.
Analysis: At the end of an Antonio Gibson eight-yard run in the fourth quarter, Thomas was seen laying on the turf and clutching at his knee. Thomas proceeded to walk slowly to the sideline with a member of Washington's training staff and quickly was deemed unable to return. He'll finish Week 13 with three catches (on five targets) for 48 yards and one touchdown.

No injury designation
Thomas (hamstring) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game in Las Vegas, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: The lack of designation comes as no surprise after Thomas took on six targets and a 77-percent offensive snap share in Monday's win over the Seahawks, his first action following a six-game stint on injured reserve. He's the likely No. 2 option for quarterback Taylor Heinicke behind wideout Terry McLaurin, especially with passing-down back J.D. McKissic (concussion) out this week.

Limited in practice Thursday
Thomas (hamstring) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Thomas' reps were capped for the second day in a row, but Washington hasn't suggested that the tight end experienced any setbacks in his return from a six-game absence in Monday's 17-15 win over Seattle. He played 77 percent of the snaps in the victory and finished with three receptions for 31 yards on six targets, and he could be primed for a larger snap count Week 13 against Las Vegas now that the hamstring issue is a little further in the rear-view mirror.

Listed as limited in practice
Thomas (hamstring) was listed as a limited practice participant Wednesday, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Thomas returned from injured reserve ahead of Monday's 17-15 win over Seattle and caught three of six targets for 31 yards while logging 66 snaps on offense (79 percent). Apart from a near-miss on a potential game-icing touchdown at the end, it was exactly what Thomas' fantasy managers hoped to see from him in his first game since Week 4. He should be ready for his usual three-down role this Sunday against a slumping Las Vegas defense.

Has touchdown overturned
Thomas caught three of six targets for 31 yards in Monday night's 17-15 win over the Seahawks.
Analysis: Thomas made his return after missing six games due to a right hamstring injury. In his first action since Week 3, Thomas trailed only top wideout Terry McLaurin in targets. Thomas also narrowly missed out on a touchdown, having what was initially ruled a three-yard score overturned late in the fourth quarter. The tight end will aim to build on Monday's performance in Week 13 versus the Raiders.

Washington activated Thomas (hamstring) from injured reserve ahead of Monday's game against Seattle.

Likely on 'pitch count' Monday
Thomas (hamstring) remains on track to be activated from injured reserve prior to Monday's game against the Seahawks, but Washington head coach Ron Rivera suggested the tight end will likely be on a "pitch count" in his return to the lineup, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Thomas, who opened the season as Washington's top tight end, has been sidelined for the past six games with a right hamstring injury, but he evidently displayed enough progress in his return to practice this week to gain clearance to play. Expected back Monday
Thomas (hamstring) is expected to be activated from injured reserve ahead of Monday's game against the Seahawks, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Thomas has apparently looked good at practice since being designated to return from injured reserve Wednesday, and he's expected to be back on the field for Week 12. The 30-year-old will have a limited snap count if he suits up, which could limit his fantasy appeal coming off the six-game absence. However, he'd still clearly be the team's best pass-catching option at tight end, especially with Ricky Seals-Jones (hip) listed as doubtful.

The tight end was designated to return from injured reserve Wednesday, opening a 21-day window where he can be either activated to the roster or sent back to IR for the rest of the season. Thomas (hamstring) is expected to be designated for a return from injured reserve during Week 12 prep, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Thomas hasn't yet been fully cleared, but his 21-day window to resume practicing is expected to open this week. The 30-year-old has been on IR since Oct. 6, and in early November he was spotted doing some work on a side field. Works off to side Thursday
Thomas (hamstring) was spotted working off to the side during Thursday's practice, but Washington has yet to designate him for return from injured reserve, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Until Washington designates him for return, Thomas won't be eligible to formally join the Football Team for practice. Given that Thomas has been sidelined since Oct. 3 with the sore right hamstring, Washington will almost certainly want Thomas to get a full week of practice in before deeming him ready for game action. With that in mind, Thomas can likely be ruled out from coming off IR ahead of Sunday's game against Tampa Bay, though a return Week 11 against Carolina could still be realistic.

Analysis: Thomas is eligible to return to game action as early as Sunday against Denver because he's spent the last three weeks on injured reserve. However, it doesn't sound as though the 30-year-old's return is imminent. Analysis: Thomas co-led the team in receptions alongside Terry McLaurin and took his fantasy performance up a notch with a garbage-time two-yard touchdown grab late in the fourth quarter. The veteran tight end thus far has shown solid chemistry with Taylor Heinicke through the signal-caller's two-plus games under center, and he's produced a 9-87 line with Sunday's score over the last two games. Thomas brought in five of seven targets for 45 yards in Washington's 30-29 win over the Giants on Thursday night.
Analysis: Thomas checked in third on the team in receptions, receiving yards and targets during the wild win, marking a second straight serviceable performance to open the season. Thomas had accounted for a touchdown on three catches in Washington's season-opening loss to the Chargers, and with a relatively inexperienced quarterback in Taylor Heinicke manning the controls of the offense for at least the next several games, the sure-handed tight end should continue to see his fair share of opportunities.

Thomas caught all three of his targets for 30 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 20-16 loss to the Chargers.
Analysis: Washington as a whole mustered just 133 passing yards, with Thomas scoring the team's only touchdown on the day. The veteran tight end finished second in yardage and third in targets, but given the mundane offensive figures as a whole it's hard to really gauge where Thomas fits into the gameplan for future weeks. Ryan Fitzpatrick left Sunday's game early with a hip injury, which could mean Taylor Heinicke will be forced into action for future weeks, complicating the target share even further.

Analysis: The former college quarterback broke out for a 72-670-6 receiving line in his age-29 season after signing last offseason with a Washington team that had minimal talent at tight end. The team's offense has stiffer competition for targets this year, but Thomas' starting job appears secure, and it's reasonable to expect continued development given that he didn't start playing at tight end until 2017. Thomas totaled between 63 and 101 receiving yards in four of his last six games including Saturday's contest, and he'll look to improve on 2020's 72-670-6 regular-season line during his 2021 contract year.

Thomas caught two of five targets for six yards in Sunday's 20-9 win over the Bengals, adding one rush attempt for another two yards.
Analysis: Thomas played 90 percent of offensive snaps and saw the second-most targets on the team during a game in which Alex Smith threw only 25 passes. Thomas will have a decent shot to bounce back in Week 12, facing a Dallas defense that he burnt for a 4-60-1 receiving line in the first 2020 matchup (Week 7) between the NFC East rivals.

Season high in receiving yards
Thomas caught four of six targets for 66 yards during Sunday's 30-27 loss to the Lions.
Analysis: Thomas set a new season high in receiving yards while tying his high mark for receptions. He tied for third on the team in targets and did most of his damage late in the game as his team strung together three straight scoring drives to draw even. Thomas now has 14 receptions on 20 targets over the last four games and will look to continue his steady emergence in a favorable matchup against the Bengals next Sunday.

Limited to 28 yards
Thomas caught three of six targets for 28 yards in Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Giants.
Analysis: The six targets were third most on the team, and the most Thomas has seen since Week 3. He played every single snap on offense for the first time this season, though he came pretty close a few other times. Even with the three-down role, Thomas is difficult to trust for fantasy purposes, playing in a subpar offense with a revolving door at quarterback. He'll catch passes from Alex Smith when Washington travels to Detroit for Week 10.

Practices in full Thursday
Thomas (ankle) practiced fully Thursday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Bumping up from Wednesday's limited showing, Thomas has put himself into a position to be Washington's top tight end Sunday against the Giants, who have allowed 8.1 yards per target (eighth worst in the NFL) and two touchdowns to the position in eight games this season.

Limited by ankle injury
Thomas was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice due to an ankle injury, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Coming off Washington's bye week, Thomas' ability to practice is a decent sign that he'll be able to suit up Sunday against the Giants. Still, his status should be watched closely over the next few days to ensure he can take on his usual share of the reps at tight end. Thomas has played at least 74 percent of the offensive snaps in each of Washington's first seven games.

Scores TD for second straight game
Thomas caught all four of his targets for 60 yards and a touchdown during Sunday's 25-3 win over the Cowboys.
Analysis: Thomas finished second on the team in most major receiving categories and scored an impressive 15-yard touchdown in the second quarter. This was Thomas' second straight game with a touchdown, while he set a new season high in yardage and tied his best output of four receptions. He should be a key cog in the offense again in Week 9 against the Giants after the Football Team's Week 8 bye.

Gets in full practice
Thomas (neck) practiced fully Thursday, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: A DNP to kick off Week 7 prep, Thomas bumped all the way up to full capacity within one day, paving the way for him to serve as Washington's No. 1 TE this weekend. He has an exploitable matchup Sunday against a Cowboys defense that has allowed a 74.4 percent catch rate (eighth worst) to opposing tight ends this season.

Held out of practice Wednesday
Thomas was a non-participant at Wednesday's practice due to a neck injury, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Serving as Washington's primary tight end this season, Thomas has yet to surpass 50 receiving yards in any given game. Still, he's had multiple catches on four occasions and two touchdowns through four games, so he has a bit of utility. Thomas will aim to fit in some practice by week's end.

Gets into end zone Sunday
Thomas brought in three of four targets for 42 yards and a touchdown in the Washington Football Team's 20-19 loss to the Giants on Sunday.
Analysis: The journeyman tight end finally scored again after a four-game drought, making an impressive contested catch in the left corner of the end zone late in the first half. Thomas' yardage tally, modest as it was, qualified as a season high, and Sunday marked his first game with multiple receptions since Week 3. Thomas will look to carry over the momentum from Sunday's productive effort into a Week 7 home showdown against the Cowboys.

Limited to one catch
Thomas caught one of four targets for four yards in Sunday's 30-10 loss to the Rams.
Analysis: The switch to Kyle Allen (arm) at quarterback didn't help Thomas, nor did it help any of the Washington pass catchers. Allen actually played decently in the first half, but he left the game with an arm injury and never returned after the break. Thomas still has an every-down role, but his heavy target volume from the first three weeks of the season has dropped off, and he still isn't putting up efficient numbers with the chances he does get. Catches only one pass
Thomas played 93 percent of offensive snaps in Sunday's 31-17 loss to Baltimore, but he was limited to one catch for eight yards on four targets.
Analysis: The snap share actually was a season high, though not much of a difference from Week 2 (91 percent) or Week 3 (86 percent). His receiving stats, on the other hand, were season lows across the board, with Thomas falling shy of seven targets and four catches for the first time this year. It does make sense that QB Dwayne Haskins would start to look toward other players, as his connection with Thomas hasn't been especially strong. Held to 31 yards
Thomas caught four of seven targets for 31 yards in Sunday's 34-20 loss to the Browns, playing 85 percent of snaps on offense.
Analysis: Thomas has finished first or second on the team in targets in every game this season, but it hasn't translated to consistent production, as he's now on pace for a 64-501-5 receiving line on 128 targets. If nothing else, his catch rate should improve as the year moves along, though efficient production may be too much to ask for in an offense with Dwayne Haskins at quarterback. Does little with high volume
Thomas caught four of nine targets for 26 yards in Sunday's 30-15 loss to the Cardinals.
Analysis: Dwayne Haskins again looked for his tight end often but wasn't quite on the same page as Thomas, and the duo's longest connection went for only 10 yards. It's still encouraging that Thomas has seen 17 targets through two games, and he could find success in Week 3 against a Browns defense that just let C.J. Uzomah (Achilles) and Drew Sample combine for 11 catches, 87 yards and a TD.

Leads team in targets
Thomas caught four passes for 37 yards and a touchdown on a team-high eight targets in Sunday's 27-17 win over the Eagles.
Analysis: Jeremy Sprinkle technically got the start at tight end, but he was limited to 40 percent of offensive snaps and zero targets, while Thomas was on the field for 74 percent of plays. Given his solid performance, Thomas figures to continue in his role as Washington's top pass-catching TE for Week 2 at Arizona, though he isn't a great bet to lead the team in targets again.

Sitting atop depth chart
Thomas is listed as a starter on Washington's initial 2020 depth chart.
Analysis: This was fully expected after multiple reports out of training camp relayed that Thomas received most of the first-team snaps. He won't necessarily have a three-down role, but the 29-year-old does figure to see more targets than Jeremy Sprinkle and Marcus Baugh, potentially setting up a rare late-20s breakout. It wouldn't necessarily be the type of breakout that leads to mainstream fantasy value, but Thomas does have a good chance to set career highs in every major receiving category.

Running with starters
Thomas was the most heavily targeted player on the first-team offense at Tuesday's practice, coming away with five catches and a touchdown, Kyle Stackpole of the official team website reports.
Analysis: Thomas has built up some hype throughout training camp, with Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post supporting the notion of the 29-year-old emerging as Washington's top tight end. A two-year, $6.15 million contract may seem modest, but it's a big investment relative to what the team spent on Jeremy Sprinkle (2017 fifth-round pick), Richard Rodgers (veteran minimum contract), Hale Hentges (UDFA) and Marcus Baugh (UDFA). Working with pass catchers
Thomas and Marcus Baugh worked with pass catchers during individual drills at Thursday's practice, while the other Washington tight ends were put in blocking drills, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Signed to a two-year, $6.2 million contract this offseason, Thomas is gearing up for a significant role in the Washington offense, perhaps becoming a starter for the first time in his age-29 season. That said, he won't necessarily handle a three-down role, and his new team is a good bet to land near the bottom of the league in cumulative TE targets. Thomas is an easy choice for fantasy managers interested in a Washington tight end, but in most cases the better option is to avoid the mess…read more

Removed from COVID list
The Washington Football Team activated Thomas (illness) from the reserve/COVID-19 list Sunday.
Analysis: When Thomas signed on the dotted line back in March, he joined a team devoid of depth at tight end, with Jordan Reed moving on after frequent concussions and Vernon Davis opting to retire. Aside from Thomas, the group currently includes Jeremy Sprinkle, Richard Rodgers and undrafted rookie Thaddeus Moss (foot), among others. That said, Thomas' start to camp was delayed due to his stay on the COVID list. Now cleared for action, he's coming off a 2019 campaign with the Lions in which he posted a…read more

Placed on COVID-19 list
Thomas was placed on Washington's reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday.
Analysis: Thomas' placement on the list doesn't necessarily indicate that he has COVID-19, as the list was created by the league for players who either test positive for COVID-19 or who have been been in close contact with an infected person or persons. The 29-year-old is slated to compete for Washington's starting job at tight end.

Eyeing top spot
Thomas has a good chance to win Washington's starting job at tight end, according to Kyle Stackpole of the team's official web site.
Analysis: The Virginia Tech quarterback turned 2014 fourth-round pick has drifted around the NFL as a backup tight end, with last season's 16-173-1 receiving line in Detroit representing a career-best performance. It may not sound like much, but Washington saw enough to give Thomas a two-year, $6.15 million contract, which is the largest commitment to any player in a tight-end room full of journeymen and undrafted youngsters. Gets opportunity in Washington
Thomas is signing with Washington, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Thomas will have a nice opportunity to earn playing time in Washington, where both Jordan Reed (free agent) and Vernon Davis (retired) have exited the picture at tight end. The team finished out 2019 with Jeremy Sprinkle and Hale Hentges atop its depth chart, while Thomas served as the No. 2 tight end in Detroit after T.J. Hockenson suffered a season-ending ankle injury. Thomas played quarterback at Virginia Tech from 2010 to 2013, so he's arguably still a work in progress as he prepares for…read more

Career highs across the board
Thomas, who caught one of three targets for 15 yards in Sunday's finale against Green Bay, finished the 2019 season with 16 catches (28 targets) for 173 yards and one touchdown in 16 games.
Analysis: While Thomas has had a slow but steady transition from quarterback to tight end over the past few years, he modestly set career marks across the board in 2019. Some of that may be due to T.J. Hockenson (ankle) missing time, but in any case, Thomas at least showed himself to be a serviceable depth option who can catch a few passes when called upon. It remains to be seen if any team around the league will reward Thomas this offseason for his development, as the 28-year-old is set to be an…read more

Fifth multi-catch game of season
Thomas caught two of three targets for 17 yards during Sunday's 27-17 loss to Denver.
Analysis: Thomas has seen a handful of targets each of the past few games with David Blough at quarterback, but the thrower's limitations have significantly capped the upside of all players in this offense. While Thomas wasn't a huge fantasy threat anyway, there's even less of a reason to trust a Lions tight end in fantasy without Matthew Stafford (back) steering the ship.

No catches on four targets
Thomas failed to catch any of his four targets during Sunday's 38-17 loss to the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Thomas shared starting honors with Jesse James and actually wound up as the position leader in offensive snaps by a slim margin. However, Thomas wasn't able to bring down any of the passes that were sent his way, and he consequently laid his sixth goose egg in 15 games. Despite the increase in playing time he's experiencing in T.J. Hockenson's (ankle) absence, it's not reasonable to expect a whole lot from the tight end as long as he's catching passes from a backup-caliber quarterback in David…read more

New season high in targets
Thomas caught two of four targets for 21 yards during Sunday's 20-7 loss to Minnesota.
Analysis: Despite T.J. Hockenson (ankle) going on injured reserve, Thomas wasn't in the starting lineup with Jesse James. However, he ultimately saw 40 offensive snaps and a season-high four targets compared to 38 and two, respectively, for James, so initially it's looking like Thomas, rather unsurprisingly, will be the bigger beneficiary of Hockenson's absence down the stretch. While Thomas has yet to top three catches or 25 receiving yards this season, he's only seen more than 20 offensive snaps on…read more

No targets on Thanksgiving
Thomas was not targeted in the passing game during Thursday's 24-20 loss to the Bears.
Analysis: After Thomas logged a season-high 28 offensive snaps last week, it seemed like his role was expanding in the Lions offense. However, the banged-up T.J. Hockenson (shoulder/leg) commanded 11 targets from new quarterback David Blough on Thursday -- compared to zero for Thomas and Jesse James combined -- which, coupled with the dip in playing time, suggests otherwise. Thomas at least has the kind of receiving upside that James does not, but it will still be difficult to trust Thomas as anything…read more

First touchdown in Lions uniform
Thomas caught both of his targets for 24 yards and a touchdown during Sunday's 19-16 loss to Washington.
Analysis: With usual starter T.J. Hockenson nursing a shoulder injury, Thomas logged a season-high 28 offensive snaps en route to his second career touchdown. While No. 2 tight end Jesse James (32 snaps) logged more playing time, Thomas is the more polished receiver and is clearly the better bet for production. Unfortunately, the continued absence of Matthew Stafford (back) for Thursday's game against the Bears all but limits Thomas' upside to that of what he did this past weekend in Washington.

Sees more playing time than James
Thomas was targeted once but did not record a catch during Sunday's 35-27 loss to Dallas.
Analysis: Despite not making a dent in the stat sheet, it was a significant day for Thomas considering he saw more offensive snaps (22) than Jesse James (15) did. It's possible Thomas could be playing more thanks to his receiving skills in a post-Kerryon Johnson (knee) offense that can't establish the run, but in case that's not the explanation, it'll be interesting to see how an upturn in playing time could translate to his fantasy production, particularly whenever Matthew Stafford (back) is back in…read more

Makes two catches
Thomas caught both of his targets for 19 yards during Sunday's 20-13 loss to Chicago.
Analysis: The gap between Thomas (18 snaps) and No. 2 tight end Jesse James (28) was greater than it was last week when Thomas only saw one fewer snap, but Thomas was yet again the more impactful receiver of the two. The issue is that Thomas probably won't ever handle a large enough workload to be of fantasy relevance as long as T.J. Hockenson remains healthy.

Similarly involved as James
Thomas caught one of two targets for 13 yards during Sunday's 31-24 loss to the Raiders.
Analysis: Thomas saw the line between the No. 2 and 3 tight end blur as much as it ever has Sunday when he logged 19 offensive snaps compared to 20 for Jesse James. Rookie T.J. Hockenson of course led the way with 46, but it's possible a change in offensive approach could be taking place without RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) around, as James has now set season lows in playing time in three consecutive weeks.
