Cut loose by Niners
The 49ers waived Alonso (knee) with a failed physical designation Monday, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports.
Analysis: Alonso tore his ACL back in January and began the 2020 season on the reserve/PUP list. He returned to practice Oct. 19 but was traded from New Orleans to San Francisco on Nov. 2. His practice period expired Nov. 14, meaning he would reside on PUP for the rest of the season unless the 49ers cut him, which they opted to do Monday. Once Alonso is healthy, he can sign with another team.

Won't return from PUP list
Alonso (knee) had his practice period expire Saturday and will remain on the PUP list for the rest of the season, per the NFL's official transaction log.
Analysis: The veteran linebacker was acquired by the 49ers from the Saints at the start of November, but he won't be returning from the PUP list this season. Alonso underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL in January and returned to practice Oct. 19, but he can't rejoin the active roster now that his designated practice period has expired.

Shipped to San Fran
Alonso (knee) and a conditional fifth-round pick were traded from the Saints to the 49ers in exchange for linebacker Kwon Alexander (ankle) on Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Alonso has been on the PUP list all season while recovering from ACL surgery at the start of 2020, though he did return to practice a couple weeks ago. The 30-year-old had 31 tackles and played only 290 defensive snaps in 13 games for New Orleans last season, so even once activated, he may not have a major role for San Francisco.

Returns to practice
Alonso (knee) received the return designation and should practice this week, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: The 30-year-old has been on the PUP list since training camp while recovering from ACL surgery in January, but his return to practice indicates he should be ready to go soon. Alonso played only 290 defensive snaps and had a career-low 31 tackles in 13 games last season, so he isn't guaranteed to have a significant role once activated.

Shifts to PUP list
The Saints placed Alonso (knee) on the reserve/PUP list Saturday, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
Analysis: Alonso tore his ACL in January and hasn't practiced yet, so it's not surprising that he'll be shut down for at least six more weeks. The veteran linebacker battled an assortment of injuries in 2019 and played a minimal role as a result, so he wasn't locked in as the clear starting middle linebacker. Craig Robertson is expected to start at the position to begin the year, and Alonso will battle for reps once he's fully healthy.

Joins PUP list
Alonso (knee) was placed on the active/physically unable to perform list Saturday, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
Analysis: Alonso tore his ACL back in January, so based on the natural timetable it seemed less than optimistic the veteran linebacker would be available to participate at the starting of training camp. It's entirely possible Alonso might not be even ready to play Week 1 of the new campaign given when the ACL tear occurred, although all reports from New Orleans seem to suggest he's still on track to participate in the coming weeks.

Agrees to deal with Saints
Alonso agreed to terms on a restructured deal with the Saints on Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Alonso's new deal will keep him in New Orleans for less than the $7.8 million he was originally slated to make in 2020. He'll likely assume a starting inside linebacker role alongside A.J. Klein. Alonso is coming off a torn ACL suffered in last season's playoffs but has made good progress in his recovery so far and could be ready by the start of the season.

Making progress in rehab
Alonso has been "making great strides in just a few short weeks" after tearing the ACL in his right knee, Amie Just of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Analysis: Alonso sustained this injury in the wild-card round against the Vikings on Jan. 5, and the team is already impressed with his progress. The 29-year-old has a chance to be ready by Week 1, but that will be cutting it close. Alonso has one year remaining on his contract and could battle for a starting role in 2020.

Tears ACL
Alonso suffered a torn ACL in Sunday's playoff loss to the Vikings, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Per the report, that's the linebacker's third ACL injury. Alonso, who recorded 31 tackles in 13 games for the Saints this past season, should be ready to start the 2020 campaign, but at this stage he's not the IDP factor he was earlier in his career.

Won't return Sunday
Alonso (knee) is ruled out to return to Sunday's wild-card playoff contest against the Vikings, Amie Just of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Analysis: The severity of Alonso's injury remains undisclosed, but he'll be forced to miss at least the remainder of Sunday's playoff tilt. Craig Robertson stands to fill in at middle linebacker in his stead.

Exits with injury
Alonso was forced out of Sunday's wild-card playoff game versus the Vikings with a knee injury, Amie Just of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Analysis: Alonso's absence is a major hit to the Saints' run defense against Dalvin Cook, and with Manti Te'o (coach's decision) inactive, Craig Robertson is expected to fill in for the time being. The 29-year-old linebacker made two tackles (one solo) before departing.

Ready to roll
Alonso (quadriceps) doesn't carry an injury designation for Week 17's game against Carolina, Amie Just of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Analysis: Despite logging limited practice time throughout the week, Alonso has shaken the injury in time for the season finale. The veteran is expected to handle his usual starting role as the team's middle linebacker for Week 17.

Ruled out for Sunday
Alonso (quadriceps) has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Titans, Mike Triplett of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Alonso got two limited practice sessions in this week before sitting out Friday. He'll miss his third game in a row as a result and will continue to be replaced by Craig Robertson.

Practices as limited participant
Alonso (quadriceps) was a limited practice participant Wednesday.
Analysis: Alonso didn't practice at all last week before being ruled out for Monday's win over the Colts, so his limited participation Wednesday is a step in the right direction. The 29-year-old should return to his rotational role in the linebacking corps if he can return to action Week 16.

Unable to play Monday
Alonso (thigh) is ruled out for Monday's game against the Colts, Andrew Walker of the Colts' official site reports.
Analysis: Alonso wasn't able to participate in practice this week, so he'll miss a second straight game. Craig Robertson started at middle linebacker in Alonso's place last week, registering eight tackles and an interception, and he figures to resume that role against the Colts.

Still not at practice
Alonso (thigh) missed Thursday's practice, Mike Triplett of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Alonso missed all of the practices prior to Week 14, and the trend continued Thursday. The Saints have two practices remaining this week, but if the 29-year-old doesn't get out there in at least a limited fashion, A.J. Klein (knee) or Craig Robertson would likely see increased snaps Monday night.

Won't play Sunday
Alonso (thigh) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against San Francisco, Mike Triplett of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Alonso picked up the thigh injury during the win over the Falcons on Thanksgiving Day and was unable to practice this week. Craig Robertson and Stephone Anthony should see increased work Sunday with A.J. Klein (knee) also sidelined.

Absent from practice again
Alonso (thigh) did not participate in practice Thursday.
Analysis: Alonso has failed to participate in either of the team's practices this week, seemingly putting his status in jeopardy for the Week 14 matchup against the 49ers. If he is unable to go, the recently signed Manti Te'o is likely to draw primary duties at middle linebacker.

No practice Wednesday
Alonso (thigh) didn't practice Wednesday, Katherine Terrell of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: It was just a walkthrough, but it's discouraging that Alonso was unable to participate. To prepare for the possibility Alonso can't play Sunday against the 49ers, the Saints signed Manti Te'o. Thursday and Friday's sessions will provide more information about Alonso's game-time status.

Considered day-to-day
Alonso is considered day-to-day after leaving last Thursday's game with a thigh injury, Katherine Terrell of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Alonso's status for this week's game against the 49ers remains up in the air, but more should be known on his potential availability when the Saints resume practice Wednesday. Manti Te'o signed to bolster the team's linebacker depth, in the meantime.

Picks up thigh injury
Alonso left Thursday's game with a thigh injury and is listed as questionable to return, Jeff Duncan of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Alonso left the game early, but considering the Saints were well ahead by the time the injury occurred, the questionable designation likely doesn't yield much information in regards to the severity of the injury.
