The Commanders recorded four sacks and a fumble recovery in the 42-14 win over the Cardinals in Week 4.
Analysis: The Commanders' offense has been humming, but the defense has produced just two takeaways (28th) and eight sacks (21st) through four games while allowing 25.5 points per game (25th). Despite this, the Week 5 matchup versus the Browns is quite appealing. The Browns have scored 16.5 points per game (27th) while QB Deshaun Watson has been sacked a league-high 19 times, making Commanders D/ST worth the risk in most fantasy formats.

The Commanders recorded two sacks in the 38-33 win over the Bengals in Week 3.
Analysis: While the Commanders' offense has impressed, their defense has been a liability, allowing 29.3 points per game and forcing just one turnover through three contests. This unit will be tough to depend on in fantasy formats versus the Commanders, who rank fourth in the league in points per game (27.3) while giving up just three total turnovers.

The Commanders recorded a sack and a fumble recovery in the 21-18 win over the Giants in Week 2.
Analysis: The Commanders have given up the fourth-most points in the league through two weeks, and they have forced just one turnover and recorded two sacks in that stretch. Thus, it's hard to see a path to fantasy relevance this season, especially in Week 3 versus the Bengals, who looked much more competent in Week 2 against the Chiefs by scoring 25 points. Steer clear of Commanders D/ST this week.

The Commanders recorded a sack and no takeaways in the 37-20 loss to the Buccaneers in Week 1.
Analysis: The Commanders didn't walk away from the opener with many reasons for hope on the defensive side of the ball, but they're gifted with a matchup versus the Giants in Week 2. QB Daniel Jones was sacked five times in Week 1. He also threw two interceptions, including a pick-six. The Commanders should have a decent pass rush with DE Dorance Armstrong now on board, but it's clearly lacking even last year's upside. It should be a solid option in Week 2 because they're facing the Giants, but the…read more

DT Daron Payne (back) was limited Wednesday but doesn't appear in danger of missing the Week 1 matchup versus the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Payne and Jonathan Allen are all that's remaining from a once-dominant defensive line, but adding DE Dorance Armstrong, who posted 16 sacks over the previous two seasons, should help cover some issues. Still, that's likely not enough for a unit that finished last in points allowed, yards allowed and fantasy scoring in 2023. The tough opening matchup against the Buccaneers, who ranked sixth last year with just 18 giveaways, means the Commanders D/ST isn't a very good fantasy option this week.

The Commanders allowed 30.5 points per game in 2023.
Analysis: This was the most points allowed in the league, and it contributed just 18 turnovers (23rd). They traded away DEs Montez Sweat and Chase Young last season, and they're hoping DE Dorance Armstrong (7.5 sacks last year) can help fill the void. Overall, this defense is hoping to just stay afloat this season. LB Bobby Wagner is still solid and S Jeremy Chinn has some upside, but the ceiling is low and the floor is dangerous. Steer clear of Commanders D/ST this year.

The Commanders recorded a sack and no takeaways in the 27-10 loss to the 49ers in Week 17.
Analysis: The Commanders held their own but couldn't accomplish much for fantasy purposes. They face the Cowboys in Week 18. The Cowboys will play their starters if the Lions win in the early window, and the Commanders D/ST won't be a good option if that's the case. After all, the Cowboys rank third in the league with 29.5 points per game while giving up just 15 turnovers (third). Even if the Cowboys rest their players, Washington hasn't shown enough upside this season to make it worth the risk.

The Commanders recorded an interception and a fumble recovery in the 30-28 loss to the Jets in Week 16.
Analysis: The Commanders were thrashed by RB Breece Hall and struggled overall against the lowly Jets. That doesn't provide much hope in Week 17 against the 49ers, who are looking to bounce back after a primetime loss to the Ravens. The 49ers rank third in the league with 29.6 points per game while giving up just 17 turnovers (10th). Steer clear of Commanders D/ST this week.

The Commanders recorded three sacks and two fumble recoveries in the 28-20 loss to the Rams in Week 15.
Analysis: This was just the second time in six games that the Commanders posted more than one sack, and they recorded their first takeaway since Week 9. Despite these struggles, there are plenty of reasons to be excited to face the Jets, who have been held to 13 or fewer points in seven of the last eight games. At the very least, the Commanders should have a high floor for fantasy in Week 16, but DFS players may want to fade this unit. The Commanders recorded no takeaways and no sacks in the 45-15 loss to the Dolphins in Week 13.
Analysis: The Commanders' pass rush has dissolved after trading away DEs Montez Sweat and Chase Young, and they have now allowed 45 points for the second straight week -- they played the Cowboys in Week 12. They face the Rams in Week 15, and while it's not as daunting as their previous two matchups, it's probably still too much for this unit to handle. The Commanders didn't record a sack or a takeaway in the 45-10 loss to the Cowboys in Week 12.
Analysis: The Commanders traded two of their top pass rusher at the deadline, and they've predictably struggled since then, allowing at least 29 points in four of five games. Now, they'll face the Dolphins, who have posted 30.8 points per game (second). There is some limited upside because the Dolphins have coughed up 19 turnovers (24th), but reasonable fantasy players will stay far away from Commanders D/ST this week.

The Commanders recorded nine sacks and no takeaways in the 31-19 loss to the Giants in Week 11.
Analysis: The Commanders' pass rush came alive and salvaged an otherwise brutal day for this defense that allowed undrafted rookie QB Tommy DeVito to throw for 246 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. This defense won't have much time to collect itself before a road matchup versus the Cowboys on Thursday. The Commanders recorded a sack and no takeaways in the 29-26 loss to the Seahawks in Week 10.
Analysis: It was another disappointing effort for a defense that traded away two of its top pass rushers at the deadline. In three games since the trades, the Commanders have allowed an average of 27 points per game while totaling three sacks and two turnovers. Despite this, they draw an excellent Week 11 matchup versus the Giants, who will start QB Tommy DeVito once again. DeVito has produced just 4.8 YPA and a 3:3 TD:INT ratio through three games. The Commanders recorded an interception and no sacks in the 20-17 win over the Patriots in Week 9.
Analysis: It's just one game but producing no sacks after trading Montez Sweat and Chase Young probably isn't a coincidence. After all, the Commanders recorded 25 sacks through the first eight games with the duo starting on the ends. They're going to be hard to trust until proven otherwise. The Seahawks are mediocre with 21.4 points per game (17th) and just 10 giveaways (11th), but there simply isn't enough ceiling to take the risk against the Seahawks' high-powered receiver corps.

Analysis: The Commanders responded to the close divisional loss by trading starting DEs Chase Young and Montez Sweat to the 49ers and Bears, respectively. This secondary couldn't hold up previously, leading to 28.5 points allowed per game (31st). There will be even more pressure now with the pass rush taking a significant step back. Analysis: Despite the loss, this was a solid effort by Commanders D/ST. It will be a short-lived celebration, as they'll face the Eagles in Week 8. The Eagles rank fourth in the league with 26.6 points per game (fourth), and while there's upside because the Eagles have given up 11 turnovers (sixth), the risk is too high. Analysis: The Commanders' pass rush is heating up, as it's now tied for seventh in the league with 19 sacks. Still, it has given up 29.4 points per game (29th) despite not facing a super difficult schedule. It's unclear if QB Daniel Jones (neck) will be ready for Week 7, but QB Tyrod Taylor was serviceable in his place, although he was sacked three times. Analysis: The Commanders held their own against the Eagles, although that didn't translate for fantasy purposes. They have an outstanding matchup in Week 5, as they host the Bears on a short week. While the Bears showed some offensive life in a favorable Week 4 matchup versus the Broncos, they still rank 22nd with just 18.8 points per game. Analysis: QB Sam Howell through a pick-six, so only 30 of those points can be blamed on the defense. It was still a difficult outing, and now they'll face the high-flying Eagles in Week 3. The Eagles are seventh in the league with 28 points per game and have stud weapons at every position. Analysis: Giving up 33 points is a serious blemish on an otherwise outstanding day for the Commanders' defense. Now, they're going to face the Bills and Eagles on back-to-back weeks. This is daunting, but potentially bad weather could keep the Week 3 matchup versus the Bills low-scoring. Analysis: The Cardinals scored a defensive touchdown, so the Commanders defense didn't allow a touchdown. They'll face a tougher test in Week 2 versus the Broncos, although there should still be a solid floor. The Commanders will face off against the Cardinals in Week 1.
Analysis: Both DE Chase Young (neck) and DT Jonathan Allen (foot) are nursing injuries, and the Commanders D/ST won't have as high of a ceiling if both players miss the opener. However, this unit will be a must-start option in versus the Cardinals, who will start either rookie fifth-round pick Clayton Tune or Joshua Dobbs under center. Neither quarterback will have a great assortment of receivers to throw to, and the offensive line is putrid, providing massive upside for opposing defenses this season.

The Commanders' starting defense is healthy to begin training camp.
Analysis: DE Chase Young played just three games last season and had his fifth-year option declined because he hasn't had a chance to prove himself. Young posted 7.5 sacks through 15 games as a 21-year-old rookie in 2020, so there certainly is enough upside to make this a dangerous unit opposite DE Montez Sweat -- who posted eight sacks last year. The Commanders will need big things out of the pass rush to be consistently fantasy relevant, especially if rookie CB Emmanuel Forbes struggles early.

The Commanders drafted CB Emmanuel Forbes in the first round (16th overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Analysis: Forbes has some question marks as a 166-pound cornerback, but he was an outstanding playmaker at Mississippi State with 14 interceptions through 36 games. The Commanders were already fantastic against the pass last season, in large part due to their stellar front four that helped accrue 43 sacks (12th). The addition of Forbes should keep the Commanders D/ST in the fantasy conversation, but he'll need to prove himself before this defense gets into the top-10 tier.

Analysis: The Commanders will be without DT Jonathan Allen (knee) -- who has 16.0 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks -- in the season finale. They'll also be without CB Benjamin St-Juste (ankle). Their defense is deep enough up front to get by without Allen, but the upside is certainly lower. It will be tough to start this unit against the Cowboys anyway, as the Cowboys -- who have scored 27-plus points in nine straight games -- will play their starters all game.

This was a putrid performance by the Commanders, but they'll have a chance to bounce back in Week 17 versus the Browns. Meanwhile, the Lions managed to put up 35 points against a stout Eagles' defense. The Lions have one of the top offensive lines in the league and an impressive assortment of pass-catchers, so they'll test the Commanders' defense in this game. Try to avoid Washington D/ST outside of deeper formats.

DE Chase Young (knee) will miss at least four games after being placed on the reserve/PUP list.
Analysis: The Commanders are mostly healthy outside of Young's injury. Young posted just 1.5 sacks through nine games last season, but the Commanders managed to finish 16th with 38 sacks anyway because their defensive line is so strong. Nevertheless, they struggled against the pass, as they ranked 29th with 254.9 passing yards allowed per game and 32nd with 34 passing touchdowns allowed. Their secondary is mostly the same and their pass rush hasn't changed, so we should expect a somewhat similar season…read more

DE Chase Young (knee) opened training camp on the PUP list and won't be ready to play Week 1 against the Jaguars.
Analysis: Young is recovering from a Week 10 ACL tear and won't be available to open 2022, though it's unclear if he'll begin the regular season on the PUP list. The unit is otherwise healthy, but Young will be a significant absence for the Washington D/ST. The defense is coming off disappointing campaign and will open the preseason Aug. 13 against Carolina.

The Commanders ranked 22nd in scoring defense (359.3 YPG) and 25th in scoring defense (25.5 PPG) last year, though DC Jack Del Rio is back for another season.
Analysis: Washington delivered strong results in 2020 and had high expectations last season with a young and talent-laden front seven, but it failed to produce even a decent campaign. DEs Chase Young and Montez Sweat missed time with injuries and combined for only 6.5 sacks in 19 games, and having that pair healthy and producing will be paramount to the unit's success in 2022. Analysis: The Football Team D/ST had a solid on-field performance, though it translated to minimal fantasy output with only one sack and zero takeaways. The outlook for the season finale improves dramatically, as the Giants offense has scored 10 points or fewer in four of the past five games with QB Daniel Jones (neck) sidelined. Washington previously hadn't surrendered 30-plus points since the sixth game of the season, but the unit is now trending in the wrong direction at the close of the campaign. Analysis: The Football Team D/ST came away with takeaways on the Eagles' first two drives but mustered only three sacks the rest of the way while giving up 238 yards on the ground. Dallas will likely attempt a similar approach with RBs Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard, though QB Dak Prescott can still get it done through the air despite some recent inconsistencies. Washington allowed 323 yards and 20 offensive points during the Week 14 loss to Dallas and play Philadelphia on Sunday.
Analysis: The Football Team already had a solid defensive performance with four sacks and one takeaway when LB Cole Holcomb came through with a pick-six in the fourth quarter. The Eagles come off their bye week having scored 30-plus points in three of the past four games, with QB Jalen Hurts rushing for 263 yards and three scores during that stretch. Analysis: The Washington D/ST wasn't flashy with just two sacks and zero takeaways, but it was another strong effort as its allowing only 17.4 points over the past five contests. However, the solid run of play hasn't resulted in much fantasy production, as the unit has only four takeaways and nine sacks during that stretch. The Football team had two sacks, one takeaway and a safety for a decent fantasy performance. Meanwhile the Raiders put up 36 points on the Cowboys last week, but TE Darren Waller (knee) may not be available. The third-down performance was the glaring problem in what was an underwhelming performance in Week 1. The Football Team features a bevy of talent up front, and it bolstered the secondary this offseason by signing CB William Jackson (three years, $42 million) and drafting Benjamin St-Juste in the third round.
