Officially joins Redskins
Smith officially has been traded from the Chiefs to the Redskins for cornerback Kendall Fuller and a third-round pick in the 2018 draft.
Analysis: With Patrick Mahomes taking over in Kansas City, the 33-year-old Smith actually ended up with a pretty sweet deal, joining a Washington franchise that's expected to give him a four-year, $94 million contract with $70 million guaranteed. It isn't out of the question that he approaches his career-best stat line from last season, as the Redskins offense is directed by Jay Gruden and features a deep group of pass catchers including Jamison Crowder, Paul Richardson, Josh Doctson, Jordan Reed…read more

Heading to Washington
Updating a previous note, Smith will be traded from Kansas City to Washington in exchange for Kendall Fuller and a third-round draft pick, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Once he joins the Redskins, Smith is expected to sign a four-year, $94 million extension with $70 million guaranteed, which is still expected to be a cheaper alternative than signing Kirk Cousins to a long-term deal. Again, none of this will take place until the new league year begins on March 14. Smith, who will turn 34 in May, spent the past five seasons in Kansas City after being traded from San Francisco in 2013 in favor of a younger option in Colin Kaepernick -- an eerily similar situation…read more

Will sign four-year extension with Redskins
Smith will sign a four-year contract extension with the Redskins, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Smith was heading into the final year of his contract with Kansas City but will now be under contract with Washington until 2022. At the earliest, the extension will be signed at the beginning of the new league year, March 14, which is when the trade will officially go through. The specifics of the extension remain unknown but look for those details to emerge over the next couple of weeks.

Traded to Redskins
An agreement is in place between Kansas City and Washington to trade Smith to the Redskins, Terez Paylor of The Kansas City Star reports.
Analysis: Information on the trade remains largely unknown, as the deal cannot take place until the new league year officially starts on March 14. Smith is coming off one of the best seasons of his career, setting career-highs in passing yards (4,042) and touchdowns (26). With Smith heading to Washington, Kirk Cousins will now need to find a new home after receiving the franchise tag each of the past two seasons.

Smith completed 24 of 33 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns while adding 13 yards on four carries without a turnover in Saturday's 22-21, wild-card round loss to the Titans.
Analysis: Smith threw for a career-best 154 first-quarter yards in leading his team to a 14-0 lead, including a 13-yard score to Travis Kelce. Kelce went down with a concussion in the second quarter, however, and the Kansas City offense largely stalled after that, though Smith did give the team a 21-3 lead with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Demarcus Robinson three seconds before halftime. This was yet another disappointing postseason exit for the 33-year-old signal-caller. His team traded up in this past…read more

Active but not expected to play
Smith is officially active but not expected to play in Sunday's season finale against the Broncos.
Analysis: Smith's status means he'll be in uniform and available to step in should rookie Patrick Mahomes suffer an injury, but that projects to be the only scenario under which he'd see the field before the postseason.

Set to be rested Sunday
Patrick Mahomes will start at quarterback in place of Smith in Sunday's regular-season finale against the Broncos, Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star reports.
Analysis: Mahomes, the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, is being groomed as Smith's successor, but his assignment Sunday doesn't signify a changing of the guard. Rather, with the Chiefs locked in as the AFC's No. 4 seed for the postseason, they'll give the rookie signal caller some valuable game experience, while affording Smith some rest. Assuming he's not unexpectedly pressed into action in Week 17, Smith with finish the 2017 season with 4,042 passing yards plus 355 rushing yards and a…read more

Smith completed 25 of 39 passes for 304 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 29-13 win over the Dolphins. He also gained 13 yards on four rushes.
Analysis: Smith was efficient spreading the ball around, as he connected with seven different pass catchers on an afternoon in which the Chiefs clinched their second straight AFC West crown. The veteran signal caller was able to hook up with Tyreek Hill downfield on multiple occasions, eclipsing the 300-yard mark through the air for the second time in the last four games in the process. Smith has also been taking care of the ball particularly well throughout December, as he's now generated a 7:1 TD:INT…read more

Smith completed 23 of 30 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 30-13 win over the Chargers. He also gained 13 yards on three carries.
Analysis: Smith completed an impressive 77 percent of his passes, posting 7.7 yards per attempt while connecting with seven different receivers. His two touchdown passes couldn't have been more different -- a 64-yard deep ball to Tyreek Hill in the second quarter and a three-yard dump-off to Kareem Hunt in the third. Smith had a 5:4 TD:INT over the previous four games as his team went 1-3, but this bounce-back effort was crucial in a divisional matchup with playoff implications. Now with a career-high 25…read more

Smith completed 20 of 34 passes for 268 yards and an interception while rushing five times for 24 yards in Sunday's 26-15 win over Oakland.
Analysis: Smith was kept out of the end zone for the second time in four weeks, but he'll gladly trade the lack of personal accolades for a team victory to stay atop the AFC West. With the defense and running game dominating en route to a 26-0 lead through three quarters, Smith simply wasn't asked to do much in this one. The veteran quarterback has a pair of elite receiving weapons at his disposal in Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill, but his recent inconsistency has been maddening for fantasy owners. The…read more

Smith completed 19 of 33 passes for 366 yards and four touchdowns while adding a 70-yard run in Sunday's 38-31 loss to the Jets.
Analysis: Smith threw a pair of first-quarter touchdowns to Travis Kelce from 22 and 36 yards out for a quick 14-0 lead. The mobile quarterback set up a second-quarter field goal with a 70-yard run and tied the game 24-24 with a 79-yard touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill in the third before hitting Hill again for a 40-yard score to take the lead in the fourth. Another 40-yard completion to Hill allowed Smith to work the ball down to New York's 19-yard line, but three consecutive incompletions resulted in a…read more

Expected to remain starter rest of season
The Chiefs plan to stick with Smith as their starting quarterback for the final five games of the season, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. "My understanding is that it is not off the table that we will see [backup quarterback] Patrick Mahomes later this season at some point," Rapoport said Sunday on the NFL Network's "NFL GameDay Morning" program. "However, the Chiefs' plan as it stands right now is to have Patrick Mahomes take a redshirt season. They plan to have Alex Smith [be] their quarterback for the rest of the year." They believe it's more physical mistakes than anything and they hope and think that the offense will respond.
Analysis: Though Smith's downturn in performance has played a significant part in the Chiefs' 1-5 slide following a 5-0 start to the season, Rapoport notes that the team has experienced more wide-ranging problems with the offense beyond the quarterback, with the run game and offensive line in particular not playing up to par. Mahomes, a 2017 first-round pick who impressed in the preseason, could get a look if the team falls out of playoff contention, but it appears the Chiefs remain confident that Smith…read more

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid reiterated Monday that Smith would remain the team's starting quarterback Week 13 against the Jets, Terez A. Paylor of The Kansas City Star reports. "Alex is my guy," Reid said.
Analysis: The Chiefs took their fifth loss in six games -- including their third in a row -- Sunday against the Bills, with Smith submitting another lackluster outing (23-for-36 for 199 yards, one touchdown and one interception) in the process. Though first-round pick Patrick Mahomes could be the long-term heir to the starting role, it appears Reid isn't eager to turn to the inexperienced rookie while the Chiefs still maintain a one-game lead in the AFC West. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said he never considered removing Smith during Sunday's 16-10 loss to the Bills and won't make a change at quarterback for Week 13 against the Jets, ESPN.com's Adam Teicher reports.
Analysis: Reid seemed to hint that he doesn't blame Smith for the Chiefs' slumping offense, though there's no denying that the quarterback had a big part in Sunday's loss, as his game-sealing interception was the product of a terrible decision. Smith completed 63.9 percent of his passes and didn't commit any other turnovers, but he mustered only 199 yards from 36 attempts (5.5), bringing his shortcomings from previous seasons to mind. Of course, Kansas City's reversion to a dink-and-dunk passing game…read more

Smith completed 23 of 36 passes for 199 yards, one touchdown and one interception while rushing five times for 35 yards in Sunday's 16-10 loss to the Bills.
Analysis: Smith and the Kansas City offense were once again stuck in low gear during the first half, as he threw for just 41 yards while entering the break with a 13-3 deficit. It wasn't until the opening drive of the second half that the team finally scored its first touchdown since the first drive of the second half in Week 9. Smith ended that drought with a screen pass to Albert Wilson, who took the ball 19 yards to the house. Unfortunately for the struggling veteran, he threw an interception to seal…read more

Smith completed 27 of 40 passes for 230 yards whie throwing two interceptions without a touchdown, and added 27 yards on five carries in Sunday's 12-9 overtime loss to the Giants.
Analysis: Smith came into this one with an 18:1 TD:INT ratio and coach Andy Reid was 16-2 coming out of a bye week before this shocking defeat, so few could have foreseen this clunker coming. The veteran quarterback's fourth-quarter interception just before the two-minute warning set the Giants up in field-goal range with the game tied 6-6. He appeared to throw a game-ending interception while trailing 9-6 on the next drive, but a defensive pass interference penalty erased that mistake and allowed Kansas…read more

Smith completed 25 of 34 pass attempts for 263 yards, two touchdowns and one interception Sunday against the Cowboys. He also carried five times for 19 yards in the 28-17 loss.
Analysis: Smith struggled in the early stages, but he got the ball rolling with a fortuitous 56-yard touchdown connection with Tyreek Hill just before the half. He hit Travis Kelce for a two-yard score in the third quarter to take a brief lead, but was forced to play from behind for most of the half and threw his first interception of the season as he tried to put his team in position to score in the fourth quarter.
