Dwyer may see fewer carries this season, as the Steelers' are prepared to give second-round draft pick Le'Veon Bell an opportunity to start, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Dwyer led the team with 623 yards on 156 attempts (4.0 avg) in 2012, his first season as the primary ball carrier for Pittsburgh. It may be good enough to fend off Bell, and we will monitor this situation during the preseason.

Dwyer, a former sixth-round pick, has received an original round restricted free agent tender, ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Dwyer averaged a mediocre 4.0 yards per carry last season, although that was better than the marks posted by Isaac Redman (3.7), Rashard Mendenhall (3.6), and Chris Rainey (3.9). Mendenhall is expected to find work elsewhere this offseason and Redman's restricted free agent tender does not involve any draft pick compensation. GM Kevin Colbert expressed displeasure with his team's group of running backs, so the Steelers seem like a good bet to use a draft pick on the position. Dwyer could be in the mix for the starting job, but the organization would probably like to find an upgrade before the season starts. We suspect that Dwyer won't receive any offers as a restricted free agent, although the sixth-round tender isn't particularly restrictive if some team desperately needs a backup running back.

Dwyer rushed for 52 yards on 11 carries and added one reception for nine yards against Cleveland Sunday.
Analysis: Dwyer had a chance to score, but consistent with the disappointing performance of the Pittsburgh backfield all season, he dropped a pass at the one-yard line. The Steelers' 26th ranked running game was a fantasy owner's nightmare in 2012. Dwyer led the team's running back-by-committee with 623 yards on 156 attempts (4.0 YPC) and two touchdowns, and added 18 receptions for 106 yards. The likely departure of unrestricted free agent Rashard Mendenhall creates an opportunity for Dwyer in 2013, although the team may look to sign another running back in the offseason.

Jonathan Dwyer ran 14 times for 39 yards in Sunday's loss to the Bengals.
Analysis: Dwyer started the game, but lost snaps to Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman as the game progressed. As the Steelers head into next week's season finale trying to avoid their first losing season under coach Mike Tomlin, it remains to be seen who will be the primary back. Until they resolve their issues with the running game, fantasy owners should look elsewhere.

Dwyer rushed nine times for 22 yards and a touchdown in Pittsburgh's Week 15 loss to the Cowboys.
Analysis: The touchdown salvaged what was otherwise an awful game for Dwyer, who was held to 2.4 yards per carry. He has averaged just 2.9 yards per carry in his last four games and we don't expect things to improve in Week 16 against Cincinnati, who held Philadelphia to 42 rushing yards.

Dwyer having breakout year
In his "Rap Sheet Rundown" analysis, Ian Rapoport notes, "It's safe to say it's been a breakout year for Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jonathan Dwyer. The third-year back from Georgia Tech is averaging 4.2 yards per carry, he's in shape, and he has two 100-plus yard games. As far as a guy I just like to watch run, the 5-foot-11, 229(ish)-pounder is definitely one of them." FULL RAP SHEET
Analysis: Although Dwyer has played a larger role, the back has posted more than 8 fantasy points just once his last five games.

Rashard Mendenhall suspended by Pittsburgh Steelers
Rashard Mendenhall's difficult 2012 season has hit another speed bump. The Pittsburgh Steelers suspended the running back one game for conduct detrimental to the team, the Steelers announced Tuesday. Mendenhall will miss Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys.
Analysis: Feel free to throw in the towel on Mendenhall, if you haven't already. He's not likely to get out of Mike Tomlin's doghouse anytime soon. This job belongs to Jonathan Dwyer.

Jonathan Dwyer: Still The Starter
Head coach Mike Tomlin said there would be no changes to Dwyer or any other running back's role, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette reports.

Dwyer had eight carries for 32 rushing yards and three catches on four targets for 18 receiving yards Sunday against the Chargers.
Analysis: Dwyer got the start and grabbed most of the running back touches, although they were few and far between, in a game where the Steelers trailed for most of the contest and threw the ball 42 times versus only 17 rushing attempts. Dwyer didn't exactly give fantasy owners encouragement about his place atop the depth chart, but he also didn't do anything to justify Isaac Redman, Chris Rainey or Rashard Mendenhall moving ahead of him for Week 15 at Dallas.

Dwyer will get another start Sunday against the Chargers, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette reports.
Analysis: Dwyer ran for 49 yards and a touchdown against the Ravens in Week 13, which was enough to earn him another start. Head coach Mike Tomlin said Rashard Mendenhall, who was inactive against the Ravens, will get another chance at some point down the road but not at this time.

Dwyer rushed the ball 16 times for 49 yards and a touchdown in the Steelers' 23-20 win against Baltimore. He also caught three passes for eight yards.
Analysis: Dwyer finally hit pay dirt in 2012, scoring on a 16 yard run, but did little else on the afternoon. It remains to be seen if Dwyer will continue to act as the primary back for Pittsburgh or if coach Mike Tomlin opts to make a change for their Week 14 game against the Chargers.

Ravens undefeated when Roethlisberger out
In his Steelers vs. Ravens "Playbook" analysis, Brian Baldinger notes the Steelers have not beaten the Baltimore Ravens during the Ben Roethlisberger era when he has not played. Donovan McNabb also added it's "hard to win when you fumble the ball five or six times" in a game. WATCH: PLAYBOOK
Analysis: The Ravens have struggled against the run, allowing an average of 128 yards per game and 10 touchdowns this season. Jonathan Dwyer is expected to lead the way, but temper expectations in what is now a crowded backfield with Rahsard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman back to health. Without Roethlisberger, the Ravens defense will likely focus on making Charlie Batch beat them through the air.

Analysis: It's difficult to read into this news, because depth charts listed on a team website are often slightly different than what the team has listed. Bouchette also notes that the depth chart has Ben Roethlisberger (ribs) and Mike Adams (ankle) listed as starters, but we'd like official word from head coach Mike Tomlin on their injuries before considering them back from injury. Chris Rainey was more effective in the passing game, logging 15 yards on four catches to go with 17 yards rushing and a touchdown. It was an all-out awful day for Pittsburgh's backs, as Dwyer, Isaac Redman, Rashard Mendenhall and Chris Rainey all lost fumbles. Analysis: Considering the last time Leftwich attempted more than 16 passes was in 2009, the Steelers could decide to rely heavily on the running game. Analysis: Isaac Redman started but had an early fumble that opened the door for Dwyer the rest of the game. Though not overwhelmingly productive Dwyer (20) had double the touches of Redman (10). With Ben Roethlisberger's injury likely to cost him some time, don't be surprised if the Steelers go ground-and- pound heavy in Week 11 against the Ravens' 26th ranked run defense, with Dwyer being the main benefactor if tonight's game is any indication.

"I'll see what they look like next week," Tomlin said after Sunday's game. "You're not getting it today."
Analysis: Of course, with Dwyer coming off his second consecutive 100-yard rushing effort -- Willie Parker was the last Steelers' back to do so (in 2008) -- it seems like a no-brainer that Dwyer will head the team's backfield in Week 9 against the Giants, assuming his quad is not a significant issue. To date, Dwyer is averaging 5.2 yards per carry, while Mendenhall checks in with 3.9 yards per carry and Redman with 2.5 yards per carry, so looking at the numbers -- and factoring in how well Dwyer has run after contact of late -- it seems more than likely that the Steelers will stick with Dwyer after having won two games in a row, powered by his strong running.

Though coach Mike Tomlin indicated after Sunday's win over the Redskins that Dwyer has a strained right quad, the running back downplayed the issue, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. "I'm fine," said Dwyer, who carried 17 times for 107 yards in Sunday's game.
Analysis: We'll have to see if the issue affects Dwyer's preparation for Week 9's game against the Giants at all, but either way the health of the team's backfield as a whole is an ongoing concern that must be monitored in the coming days, with both Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman inactive on Sunday and not locks to be ready next week.

Dwyer had 107 rushing yards on 17 carries and eight receiving yards on one catch Sunday against the Redskins.
Analysis: Dwyer started in place of Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman, both of whom sat out with injuries. In his second career start, Dwyer became the first Steelers' running back to rush for over 100 yards in back-to-back games in four years. Despite the success, he'll likely return to the backup role, if Mendenhall and/or Redman can return for next week's game against the Giants.

Steelers' Jonathan Dwyer's rise forces tough decisions
The Pittsburgh Steelers have struggled to run the ball this season, but Jonathan Dwyer's breakout performance against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday night offers hope.

Analysis: Dwyer had a solid game with Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman on the sidelines, but it was Chris Rainey who scored the lone rushing touchdown of the night. Dwyer's value is directly related to the health of Mendenhall and Redman, who may return Week 8 against the Redskins. Analysis: It looks like Jonathan Dwyer will get the start and most of the touches. Analysis: That's a sentiment echoed by Aditi Kinkhabwala of the NFL Network, who cites Mendenhall as indicating that Dwyer will get the nod. In any case, we'd expect Baron Batch and Chris Rainey to see touches as well, with none of the three being especially high percentage plays.

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette suggests that Dwyer would be in line to make the start Sunday in Cincinnati if both Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman are unable to suit up.
Analysis: Dwyer has been inactive the last two games, which led to the Steelers turning to Baron Batch in Week 6 when Mendenhall and Redman went down, but Batch's 2.2 yards per carry in relief could prompt the team to revert back to Dwyer, who split carries with Isaac Redman the first couple of weeks of the season. Dwyer's role in the Pittsburgh backfield is uncertain with Rashard Mendenhall (knee) expected to return from ACL surgery Sunday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: While players were careful not to say that Mendenhall was an upgrade over Isaac Redman and Dwyer, they did acknowledge Mendenhall's big-play ability. "Our running game is a work in progress, and any time you add a player of Rashard's caliber and experience into the team it is certainly a plus," said tight end Heath Miller. Dwyer will likely be little more than a change-of-pace back, after rushing for just 70 yards and no touchdowns on 24 carries through three games. Jonathan Dwyer: Impresses Tomlin
Dwyer, who finished the preseason with 28 carries for 147 yards, for a 5.3 average, has impressed coach Mike Tomlin, the Steelers' official site reports. "He toted the load tonight," Tomlin said after Dwyer's 13-carry, 63-yard preseason effort Thursday. "He was the primary ball carrier, and that's kind of what we wanted to see. It's really a snapshot of his growth and development throughout this training camp and preseason. First things first, he showed up in good physical condition, and that's a prerequisite. He kind of took off from there. What he showed tonight is kind of a snapshot of what he's done for us here in the last month or so. It needs to continue. He's capable of it continuing."
Analysis: Meanwhile, Isaac Redman has been dealing with an ankle injury, so there could be added opportunities out of the gate for Dwyer if Redman is less than 100 percent to start the season.
